Inside the 9th Region (12/19)

Featured Replies

Usually not much movement in the rankings during this time of the year, as most teams are playing in holiday tournaments around the state, but we do have a few changes in the rankings this week at the bottom of the top 10:

1. Covington Catholic (7-1)

The Colonels got dealt their first defeat of the season in a road loss to Cincinnati Moeller (60-51) despite AJ Mayer posting a double double of 10 points, 18 rebounds. Scott Ruthsatz team has responded nicely, however, with wins over North Hardin (60-33) and Franklin-Simpson (79-71) to advance to the King of the Bluegrass semi finals. CJ Fredrick finished with 19 points against North Hardin and followed that up with 30 against Franklin Simpson, while Cole Vonhandorf had 21 and 23 in the two wins. Jake Walter also recorded a double double in the win over Franklin Simpson with 12 pts, 11 rbs.

Up Next: 12/19 v Trinity at Fairdale (King of the Bluegrass); 12/20 v TBA at Fairdale (King of the Bluegrass); 12/23 at Boone County

2. Cooper (4-3)

The Jags opened the week with an 81-51 rout over Ryle, but fell to Trinity (55-53) and Christian County (77-61) in their two games at the King of the Bluegrass. Sean McNeil led five double figure scorers for the Jaguars with 21 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists against Ryle. McNeil 16 and 8 against Trinity and 19 against Christian County. Adam Kunkel also continued to play well with 13 against Ryle, 22 against Trinity, and 11 against Christian County.

Up Next: 12/20 at Fairdale

3. Dixie Heights (5-1)

Dixie went 1-1 this week with a win over Beechwood (45-41) and a loss to Campbell County (61-59). Reed Bradfield (20 pts) and Hunter Meyer (11 pts) led the Colonels in the Beechwood win and reversed roles in the Campbell County loss as Meyer scored 22 and Bradfield had 14 as the only two Colonels to reach double figures.

Up Next: 12/21-12/23 at Simon Kenton (Simon Kenton Invitational)

4. Lloyd (5-1)

At the beginning of the week, Lloyd proved to be a legit top 5 team. Derrick Cippolone (19 pts), Sterling Hamilton (15 pts), and Isaiah Voet (10) all reached double figures in a 70-65 road win over Holmes. By the end of the week, people were wondering if they even belonged in the top 10 after a 67-55 road loss to Williamstown. Wins over Holmes and Newcath keep the Juggs at #4 but there are definitely some questions after their first loss of the season.

Up Next: 12/19 at Bellevue; 12/21 v Gallatin County at Simon Kenton (Simon Kenton Invitational)

5. Newport Central Catholic (3-3)

Newcath picked up wins over Newport (61-47) and Boone County (57-41) this week but the Breds ended the week with a 74-63 loss to Campbell County. Junior Brennan Hall was the leading scorer in all three games with 19, 14, and a career high 26 points against Campbell County. Trey Wurtz had 14 points, 13 rebounds in the Campbell County loss.

Up Next: 12/20 at Scott County; 12/23 v Holy Cross

6. Holmes (5-2)

The Bulldogs went 1-2 this week with a win over Buckhorn (58-39) and losses to Lloyd (70-65) and Taylor County (51-50). LJ Miller finished with 23 points to lead Holmes in the Lloyd loss, while Rico Hollis had 16 against both Taylor County and Lloyd. Jaiden Greene finished with 18 against Buckhorn and 16 against Taylor County.

Up Next: 12/20 v Campbell County; 12/22 at Walton Verona

7. Beechwood (5-2)

Ben Toebbe led the Tigers with 13 points, 10 rebounds in a 45-41 loss to Dixie Heights while Owen Alcorn had a career high 20 points in a 55-49 win over Pendleton County. Eighth Grader Scotty Draud finished with 10 points in the win over Pendleton County.

Up Next: 12/21 at Williamstown; 12/22 at Henry County

8. Ryle (3-4)

After a 30 point loss to Cooper (81-51) to start the week, the Raiders picked up a big 33rd district win over Conner (61-59) on the road. Braden Cheesman led Ryle with 16 points in the loss to Cooper, while sophomore Vince Rankin had 10 points and had a team high 15 points in the win over Conner. Up Next: 12/21 at West Jessmaine; 12/22 v Frankfort at East/West Jessamine (Farmers Bank of Jessamine County); 12/23 v John Hardin at East/West Jessamine (Farmers Bank of Jessamine County)

9. Conner (4-4)

Rough week for the Cougars as they lost to Simon Kenton (81-77) in overtime, Ryle (61-59), and Walton Verona (59-54). Spencer Hemmerich had a big week, despite the losses, with 30 against Simon Kenton, 22 against Ryle, and 27 against Walton Verona. The Cougars will get an 11 day break to re-group before the next game.

Newport started the week with a 61-47 loss to Newcath, but rebounded with a 79-71 win over North College Hill, OH. Mekell Burries, Donnie Miller, and Najae Williams all scored 9 points, each in the loss to Newcath while Burries (16 pts), Makhi McGuire (15 pts), Tahj Harding (14 pts), and Miller (13 pts) all reached double figures in the win over North College Hill.

Up Next: 12/20 v Jeffersontown at Lexington Christian (Central Bank Classic); 12/21 v Western Hills, OH at Bellevue (Swauger Holiday Classic); 12/22-12/23 v TBA at Bellevue (Swauger Holiday Classic)

11. Boone County (2-5)

After a big win over South Laurel last week, Boone fell to Newcath (57-41) and Indian Hill, OH (43-30) this week. Ethan Nyman led the Rebels with 11 points against Newcath.

Up Next: 12/20 at Holy Cross; 12/23 v Covcath

12. Highlands (2-5)

I don't think many predicted the Birds would lose to both Williamstown (74-48) and Walton Verona (70-62 OT) but they did beat Bishop Brossart (61-29) in convincing fashion to end the week. Bryce Traylor was the only Bluebird to reach double figure scoring against Williamstown with 12 points, but Kyle Finfrock did pull down 10 boards in the loss. Traylor also led Highlands with 15 points against Walton, with Finfrock contributing 13 points. Jacob Noe and Roddy Gabbard finished with 14 and 11 points in the win over Brossart.

Up Next: 12/21 at Simon Kenton; 12/22-12/23 v TBA at Simon Kenton (Simon Kenton Invitational)

13. Holy Cross (1-7)

The Indians ended a 5 game losing streak with a 77-73 win over Scott, but started a new streak with losses to Rowan County (71-69) and West Carter (62-60). Jaylin Williams had 18 points, 10 rebounds in the win over Scott, while Nolan Schrand (19), Jordan Niehaus (14), and Derrick Barnes (13) all reached double figure scoring as well. Will Volpenhein had a game high 25 points in the loss to Rowan County.

Up Next: 12/20 v Boone County; 12/23 at Newcath

14. St Henry (3-3)

Stephen Maley led the Cru with 25 points in a 62-45 win over Bellevue in St Henry's only game this week.

19. Heritage Academy (0-8)

Heritage is averaging just 25 ppg after losses to Calvary Christian, Dayton, and Berea this past week.

Holy Cross will continue their losing ways if that coach doesn't open his eyes. He has the players to be competitive and win. He just doesn't see the light. This might be harsh, but it needs to be said; number 5 is not the best player on your team! He is your son and you cannot see that! He plays more minutes than anyone. He wouldn't even start on most teams. To quote one of your own , " this is a trainwreck" and Coach you are at the controls. Players who have played against you and coaches who have coached against you, 90% agree with what I'm saying just no one wants to say it. I don't have a dog in your race, so I don't mind saying it. Wake up coach, you have the team, now use the right players.

Welcome to the board.

Nothing like firing right out of the gate.

In the Lloyd/Williamstown thread no one could seem to expand on Hamilton's role in this loss for the Juggs. If he didn't play many minutes, that in itself is telling, but no more details other than that have ever been offered. :idunno:

Beechwood, who has to be feeling good about themselves as well they should, must feel like they are marching into a minefield, heading to Williamstown on the 21st after seeing Highlands and Lloyd get thumped by the Demons in their most recent contests.

Excellent verb choice!

Where does Campbell County fall?

Where does Campbell County fall?

They fall in the 10th region.

They fall in the 10th region.
silly me I was thinking NKY, not 9th region. Change of pace from football. Well just for hypotheticals I'd hope they'd fall around #3 lol

Does no one even want to post the score of the HC and Boone County game from last night? How about some stats?

Congratulations to Nolan Schrand for his stellar performance in pacing the Indians with 19 points including 4 three's. Kid can downright light it up from downtown!

Rogers was obviously the difference in this game connecting on 8 three pointers and netting a total of 30 points on the evening in the Rebel's victory. Good luck to both teams going forward.

Any thoughts on what need to happen for HC to right the ship?

Why don't you share your thoughts, I'm sure you have some ideas that could stimulate the conversation.

I believe in coaching the team you have and not the team you want. I demand our defensive effort exceeds or matches our offensive effort. If you don't play D you won't play. I prefer to play inside out rather than rely on the long jump shot.
