Demise of The Ashland Tomcats?

Featured Replies

I have been to almost every Ashland football practice, and I have watched as this team has pulled together. I tell you this, its not because they went to ground game, it’s not because they changed a lot of linemen...

The truth is Ashland just wasn’t ready for its first game; linemen were hurt so guys had been shifted out of position, Mahan was making mistakes and the coaching staff felt that Drew had more experience and tried using him at QB for the first game giving Mahan more time to get his timing down.

Then Walters got off the injured list and returned to center, the position he played last year, the line got some time to jell since they all had been moved around to make up for hurt players. Now we see lacy winning back his old spot at left tackle as he recovers from his injury. Believe me when I say Darrel will throw the football, Ashland was smart enough to see the weakness in the stamina of the W/Portsmouth defense and the ground was the best way to make that work for us.

Every team and every night is different and Ashland may still loose a few games but all in all they are a good football team, as the season progresses they should just get better if they can keep their players healthy.

One other thing I would like to say. Everyone lets on like it was some kind of complete screw up that Raceland beat Ashland... on that night, on that day, Raceland was able to put the points on the board, you can’t take that away from them, they are a better team than a lot of people gave them credit for.. It’s not the end of the world to loose your first game. It’s the end of the season that counts and Ashland will be ready !

Quoted or not,,,you thought it!:p

Well then, what was I thinking there,......... Nostradaumus.

:D

It's good to see the school let Ashland play the rest of their schedule instead of cancelling the season after the Raceland loss like many fans felt like they needed to do. It's also good to see that the sky has been hoisted back above Ashland after it's apparent fall three weeks ago.

:thumb:

No kidding! I would have been devastated.

GulfCoastTyrant: 0 - 3??

Hmmmmm.........

I'd hate to say it, but it is likely.

I didn't expect them to win both games against Belfry and Russ.

That is tough. Splitting will be awesome!

These were just a few of the quotes from the Ashland-Raceland thread, I'm sure there were more from the following weeks threads Ash-Belfry - Ash-Russell. I found it humorous, considering Ashlands 3 successive wins.

Don't throw me under the bus!

I'm proud that I AM quoted in this post. I don't have Maroon-blockers on.

When the defending State Champions,

A MVP and Mr. Football candidate,

A powerhouse team with strings of playoff wins and 3 straight Semifinal appearances come back to back on your schedule........splitting would be good.

I put them down for splitting with Belfry /Russell and going undefeated in the district.

(dont forget it took 4 overtimes to pull out the victories. :thumb: )

Here is the rest of the quote....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

0-3.......... on their way to 7 - 3. That would be a GREAT season.

Early losses and good competition make for a hardened team come time for district games.

thanks for putting my name out there. Ashland has played better but still has improvements to go.

Getting beat by Raceland or any team shouldn't suprise anyone. Ashland is everyone's big game on their schedule and we get everyone's best shot on Friday Nights. The shocker will be if Rose Hill develops a team and beats Ashland in their first game. This Ashland team won't go far in the playoffs if they don't start playing more aggressive.

No offense but where have you been the last three weeks. Ashland has played more aggressive than i've seen in some time. Have you seen them run up the middle lately, they've been blowing people off the ball!

Until now, I have resisted even biting on this thread, but since it seems to still be on life-support, I will put my two-cents worth in the hat. From your outside perspective, Tubby’s Best Friend, I will use your obvious endorsement of UK basketball to try and offer an explanation regarding your surveillance about the “demise” of the Tomcats.

UK basketball fanatics are quick to believe the sky is falling whenever the Wildcats lose a ballgame…the Tomcat program, like UK, is much heralded within our community and loved just as deeply albeit on a much smaller scale. Ashland is very accustomed to winning and WE EXPECT IT. When that doesn’t happen, especially to a team we should have beaten (no disrespect to Raceland – they earned that win), it makes us quick to lament and wonder just what happed to our local football universe. Suffice to say, if you are not part of something like this, it may be difficult to understand.

Win, lose or draw…I bleed maroon and there is probably nothing which could ever change that.

Well said Painter, you wax poetic today.

Well said Painter!! It's fans like you that make programs such as Ashland's what they are.I am sure the coaching staff appreciates it and guarantee the kids feed off of the positive influence that you bring to the program. Nice job:thumb:

I stand by my comment. Should we go back and look at some of the stuff you have said? Nobody could have seen this turnaround after the Raceland game. They played horrible. I'm sure even you die-hard Tomcat fans had some doubts after watching that game. Just admit it!!! But, I'll stand by my comments.

Who is the "you" that was referred to in your post?

Not really sure the meaning of this topic. I'm sure all Ashland fans had question marks after that first game as any person of any other program would have when you have high expectations going into a season.

The point now is that the Cats have righted their ship. The backs are running hard and gaining big yards as the big Ashland line is starting to jell as a unit and opening some big holes. The big names are starting to make big plays on offense and defense.

It is good to see these young kids gaining some confidence in what they can do and if they keep improving and gain a few brakes along the way then the sky's the limit for this team.

Here's hoping they have a successful season.

I'm assuming TubbysBestFriend.
