Demise of The Ashland Tomcats?

Featured Replies

Here are a few of the comments made following Ashlands loss to Class A Raceland in Week 1 of the 2006 season.

We now see the Tomcats at 3-1. Maybe some shouldnt have drunk the koolaide so fast.

mhighfield: Could be a long year in Tomcat country and will be interesting for there commits here as they was way confident all week this would be a big time blowout.Did anybody else hear the Ashland radio guys they were just so down on the tomcats as if the season was over and now.

Jeepman: I,m not sure what the Tomcats were doing tonight but it appears it might be a long season.

RedDevilMVP06: Ashland needs to consider a new direction or get use to under achieving. This isn't new , even Dickie was down.

RedShift: If Ashland only has two more home games after the first three weeks, they could be in serious trouble down the stretch.

Tcatfan: Ashland has a lot of work or they could easily start 0-4 with Belfry, Russell and W. Portsmouth. All 3 of these teams are going to be tough games.

UKCatsFan: Great win for the Rams, tough tough tough loss for the Tomcats. They have Belfry, who beat the defending 1A champs and a favorite to repeat this year, and then the Devils come to Putnam. Ashland COULD start the season 0-3. Anybody can beat anybody on any given day, you never know what can happen in a rivalry game like Russell vs. Ashland, but I don't see them beating either.

GulfCoastTyrant: 0 - 3??

Hmmmmm.........

I'd hate to say it, but it is likely.

I didn't expect them to win both games against Belfry and Russ.

That is tough. Splitting will be awesome!

Devil58: this was not a "vintage" Ashland team you beat by any stretch of the imagination

TomcatSalute: We arent a very good football team. We only play about 15-16 guys with 40 on the sidelines just watching. The coaches say we have alot of depth which is true but we dont use it. Ashland will start 0-3 and probably will only win 3-4 games.

These were just a few of the quotes from the Ashland-Raceland thread, I'm sure there were more from the following weeks threads Ash-Belfry - Ash-Russell. I found it humorous, considering Ashlands 3 successive wins.

Stand by this , Ashland did take a different direction - it's now ground based. The Thomas kid has stepped up --- on the ground ...

When Ashland committed to the run things began to improve... Also said many times Mahan is a player and needed to be on the field ....

No charge for the advice ...

Thanks for the free advice MVP – I’m sure that listening to you is how we beat your devils.

BTW you remind me of a country song “stand by your man”. :D

This is good stuff Tubbo!

Im glad some of the fans on this site aren't on the team. You would've thought the sky was falling after the raceland game. Hats off to the coaching staff and players for not letting all that negative talk affect them.

I know Thomas busted out against the Devils, but it wasn't the ground game that they used to beat Belfry, REDDEVILMVP'06. The bulk of their success was airborn. So they made that turnaround before taking that new direction, it would seem. Or maybe they kept doing the things they do well and just improved on the things that needed work.

This proves you cant judge a teams whole year by their first game. Ashland is a completely different team now than week one in my opinion. The running game is really setting the tone and controling the flow of their games. Keep it rollin CATS!!!

When a school the size of Raceland beats a school the size of Ashland then I think it's fair to think that Ashland could have been in for a tough season! Congrats to the Tomcats on the turnaround. True character. This also makes that Raceland win in Putnam even more special IMO.

Great post TBF :thumb: There were alot of doubters, that is for sure. I said all along that Ashland would be fine. Ashland lost to a very good football team in Raceland. Yeah, it is a class A school but they (we) are good. Ashland is also a very good football team as I think thyey are proving now.

:thumb: Well said.

Ashland made the necessary personel changes to give them the best chance to win. They did that by putting Mahan in at quarterback and changed some linemen around and have been relying more on the running game. Had they not made these changes I still believe they would have lost to Belfry and Russell. I'm glad they won these because they were great confidence builders and the kids would have been really down had they lost both of these. Ashland is becoming a good football team. There are still several players out injured. Some of these are starters and others play alot. Get everyone healthy and keep improving and see what happens when district play starts.

It's good to see the school let Ashland play the rest of their schedule instead of cancelling the season after the Raceland loss like many fans felt like they needed to do. It's also good to see that the sky has been hoisted back above Ashland after it's apparent fall three weeks ago.

Im very proud of the fact that I'm not quoted in this post! :thumb:

Getting beat by Raceland or any team shouldn't suprise anyone. Ashland is everyone's big game on their schedule and we get everyone's best shot on Friday Nights. The shocker will be if Rose Hill develops a team and beats Ashland in their first game. This Ashland team won't go far in the playoffs if they don't start playing more aggressive.

Quoted or not,,,you thought it!:p
