December 7, 20169 yr Former Hilltoppers QB Willie Taggart is Oregon's new football coach. Best of luck. Edited December 7, 20169 yr by 16thBBall Fan Spelling
December 7, 20169 yr Good for him. He has proven he can turn programs around and at Oregon he will have every resource he could ever want. 2 things that could slow him down... inability to get an OC he needs and recruiting.

Taggart is a great recruiter. What he did here in the conference he was in is evidence of that. He'll bring his Gulf Coast offense and coordinators Reaves and Weist to help. However, he won't have Quinton Flowers to run it.
December 7, 20169 yr T.J. Weist will be USF's interim head coach for the Birmingham Bowl vs South Carolina.
December 7, 20169 yr Charlie Strong to USF. Don't know that it'll happen, but I feel like he could be successful there.
December 8, 20169 yr Taggart is a great recruiter. What he did here in the conference he was in is evidence of that. He'll bring his Gulf Coast offense and coordinators Reaves and Weist to help. However, he won't have Quinton Flowers to run it. He spent two years at Stanford, the rest of the his time was at WKU and in his home state at USF. Will he be able to attract FL kids to Oregon? Does he have enough relationships on the West Coast to get top level kids, while competing with Washington and USC? Willie being a Harbaugh guy by definition means he wants to run the football, but he has been able to evolve his offense to the personnel he had at USF, but the key decision will be who he hires as a DC, because it could be said the best hire Willie made at USF was bringing in Tom Allen for one season, which possibly saved his season. I hope Willie does a great job, but he will have to hire a very good DC, recruit the right kids to fit his system, and be given enough time to implement his philosophy.

The big difference between the Taggart era and the Holtz era at USF was Taggart and his staff were focused on the in-state kids a lot more; especially the Gulf Coast area. Whoever gets the job next will have a great opportunity to continue what Taggart had going especially because of their recruiting area.
December 8, 20169 yr Oregon is not the job it use to be under Kelly. It's still a great job and I'm sure Taggart is on cloud 9.
December 8, 20169 yr I wish Willie the best, but I'm a bit surprised. This is definitely not the home run hire they were acting like they were going for.

We'll never know, but I wonder where Taggart fell on their list of top candidates. I know Tony Dungey gave Taggart a high recommendation, but if you're Phil Knight and Oregon and you think your program is one of the best then shouldn't they be able to pull a coach from one of the top Power 5 schools? Taggart is going to get a lot of money and every resource possible with Phil Knight support, but something about this move just doesn't feel right from a fan perspective.
