Johnson Central 48 Franklin-Simpson 0 - 4A State Championship

Featured Replies

So when does Matney sign that contract at Belfry?

Obviously not until Haywood is ready to hang it up, and he said this weekend that ain't this year. Guess JC will have Matney at least 1 more year.

Matney has his own good thing going at JC and when Haywood retires I would be surprised if he doesn't hand the keys to one of his own assistants

Congrats to JC on their first State Championship...my memories of JC tell me you are all still celebrating and will be for some time and rightfully so :thumb:

Waiting for @Tommy2tone to finally rank johnson Central ahead of Franklin-Simpson for the first time this season.

Every single week he has been consistent in ranking F-S ahead so it should be an official right of passage that t2t makes the final ranking with JC at #1 before we can officially crown them Champs. Kind of like making sure all precincts are reporting in an election HAHA

Congrats to JC. Dominated the game. However, it seemed to me that FS didn't even want to be there half the time. FS is a much better team then what was shown tonight.

No offense but this was the State Finals... they wanted to be there at the Start of the game, just maybe not so much once it got out of hand.

What it looked like to me is F-S just was in shock that they finally met a team that controlled both LOS's and that they could get literally no offensive movement against.

After the score got in the Mid-20's it was almost like they realized that their gameplan and personnel they were not going to get the win unless something crazy happened. It was almost like playing a video game on the hardest difficulty and wanting to hit the re-set button .

@Tommy2tone might also reconsider the rest of his rankings. Apparently teams like Ashland, Wayne County, Knott County Central, Mercer County, and Greenup County were not quite the cupcakes that many in western Kentucky assumed that they were. Johnson Central made quite a few teams look bad this season that would have held their own against Franklin-Simpson's schedule.

Not sure anyone thought those teams were cupcakes. Ashland, Wayne, Mercer and Knox were all ranked for the biggest part of the year. They certainly weren't murder's row, but, solid teams. FS played Hoptown, Russellville, Greenwood and SWarren twice. Again, not murderer's row, but, solid teams.. Based on the full body of work over the course of the season, I definitely feel FS was the 2nd best team in the class, just JC was head and shoulders above the pack, just like BG in 5a, Trinity in 6a and Belfry in 3a.. All those teams won big, as well, but, it doesn't mean Lafayette, Pulaski and Central didn't deserve to be there..

I was referring to @Tommy2tone's rankings and the tendency for some western Kentucky members to exaggerate the quality of Franklin-Simpson's competition. Had John Hardin, Hopkinsville, or any of the other western Kentucky teams that Franklin-Simpson vanquished met Johnson Central in the finals, the result would have been the same that it was for the Golden Eagle's district opponents this season.

I agree that Franklin Simpson was the second best team in 4A, but based on a comparison of scores, I don't think that there was any real difference in the overall strength of the 4A teams in the east and west, except for Johnson Central.

Too many based their impression of Johnson Central on the injury riddled team that lost to South Warren in the 2015 title game. South Warren was the top 4A team in 4A last season, but IMO, a healthy Johnson Central was the second best team in 4A last season and they were a very young team. Next season should be a great season for JC, but the young linemen will have some very big shoes to fill.

Next season JC returns both guards, their center, and three down defensive lineman. The return their entire backfield except FB and their QB. They need to replace a very good TE (Marshall) and a very good defensive end. There is no way to replace Geordan Blanton and we will need to replace two pieces out of our secondary and very good LB's.

Point: JC will be very good again next year. Barring injury I fully expect them to back in BG to face the champions from the West again.

Ole boys gone into hiding, still trying to figure out how JC won a game away from home. Not to bad for an average defense like JC to hold FS to 18yds total offense.

Wow - congrats to JC, great program and now over the hump against a great Franklin Simpson team. I would love to see JC play BG or Belfry play BG.

Also - congrats to Franklin Simpson - those of us in Western KY know what a great program they are, good teams year after year. Great season and state runner-up.

FS loses some important players but we had a lot of juniors and sophomores playing last night too. Wouldn't surprise me to see a rematch next year in the finals, but I'm sure Hopkinsville and John Hardin will have something to say about that. South Warren is moving up to 5A next year.

From what I saw:

Belfry's Offense is better suited to give Bowling Green all kinds of trouble

Johnson Central's Defense would be better suited to get some stops against Bowling Green

Not sure Belfry could stop Bowling Green's Offense enough, specifically their vertical passing, but think Belfry would absolutely sustain success against BG.. Would take Bowling Green in a game that resembles Belfry's loss to Knoxville Catholic.

Johnson Central probably would stand the better chance of the two of pulling the upset as I feel their Defense could take away some of BG's balance and make things very difficult. With that said, BG's Front 7 would match up better with JC physically. I would say maybe a BG win by 10-17, 28-14 kind of game.

Bowling Green just has so many weapons and is solid at every single position unit. I honestly can't see anyone except Trinity that would beat them.

OK guys...JC #1 in my book you deserved it. Congrats on finally winning the big one.

You guys should move to N. KY...

Not gonna argue east/west.

So when does Matney sign that contract at Belfry?

I don't think that will ever happen.
