December 4, 20169 yr Because OSU was ranked higher pre season which has came down to the difference in them getting in and not PSU Penn St. was 2-2 after their first four games. That bad start to the year hurt more than anything else. Was anyone else watching tonight's game and saw Penn St. trailing 28-7? Yes, very good comeback for the win but that game tonight did not boost Penn St. above any of the top teams ahead of them in the rankings.

December 4, 20169 yr OSU has 4 wins against teams that were in the top ten or eventually were (Nebraska, Michigan, Wisconsin, eventually Oklahoma top ten). Those 4 wins are enough to get them into the CFP. Conference championships are important, but OSU has showed they are more than good enough to be considered a top 4 team in the nation.

I can't imagine Washington being left out with how they beat Colorado, Alabama and Clemson are in, and I think Ohio State probably still gets in. Penn State is probably the team left out.
December 4, 20169 yr If you win the championship of one of the top 4 conferences in DI football, and you(NCAA) harp on winning your conference, how do you not go with those conference champs? I was against a 6-8+ team NCAA playoff, but this year sure may be an indication there probably should be more than 4 and I say that reluctantly.
December 4, 20169 yr Pretty easy call for the 3rd year in a row. In a season where you only play 12 or 13 games, EVERY game is important. (This is not like March Madness with a 30-35 game schedule before decisions are made.) People seem to want to disregard Penn State's 2 losses and only focus on their B1G Champ and win over tOSU at home. Head to head is a key factor. Conference championship is a key factor. Neither of them is dispositive and, although it is rarely stated, Wins & Losses are THE key factor. There are 4 P5 teams with less than 2 losses. Rank them however you like after you put Bama 1st. Doesn't bother me.

So if VT and Florida won, they are 2 of your Top 4 teams and in the Playoff? It is a factor. It is not an automatic berth.
December 4, 20169 yr But they won the conference championship... Everyone says the Big12 needs to have a conference championship game for playoff purposes. But why should they, if it means nothing to win the conference? I'm not cut and dry about it what I just said above, but I think that Penn State winning the conference means something. So if they win the conference, as well they beat OSU head to head, in what logical way would OSU be deemed the better team? It can help and hurt. In a year where 3 Big12 teams tie with 1 loss and each of the teams has lost to 1 of the other (i.e., basically the situation in the B1G "east" division this year where head to head doesn't resolve anything), the Committee would be inclined to leave all 3 out rather than face the controversy of putting 1 of the "Co-Champions" in. (NOTE: Big12 tie-breaking rules instituted in JUN 2015 after this situation almost happened in 2014-15 is just words. Nobody seriously believes that a "Champion" under these rules is substantially better than the other 2 teams.) Not having a championship game can help if you have a clear leader with a marginal resume that loses the championship game but would clearly have been in if they didn't have to play that game.

Politically - why would the Pac12 stay in an arrangement where their champion has an argument and gets left out 2/3 years the system is in existence? Won't happen.

I don't think that will happen, but those are the 4 best teams. No doubt about it. Everyone needs to get over the conference champ thing. This isn't the college football of old where it matters who wins the conference and goes to the Rose bowl for instance. The conference championship game is just another game against a really good team to add to your resume. The actual label of conference champ holds no weight. The committee was tasked with getting the 4 best teams, not 4 best conference champs, not 4 teams with best record, not 4 teams with toughest schedule, the 4 best teams. That's it's. The only criteria is best.

December 4, 20169 yr Ohio State played top teams but they also played more low ranked teams than Washington. People keep hammering the bottom of Washington's schedule but Ohio St. played three teams with a power ranking lower than 100 (Bowling Green, Rutgers and Mich. St.). The bottom of the Ohio St. schedule is the worst of the top 4. And Ohio St. almost got beat by one of those low ranked teams. I really was surprised that Mich. St. performance did not hurt Ohio St. in the rankings. There is (or should be) a difference in non-conference v. conference schedule because you have FULL control of your non-conference schedule. Washington CHOSE to play Rutgers and tOSU was forced to do so. tOSU CHOSE to play at Oklahoma and Washington chose to play Portland St.
