Belfry 52 Central 31 - 3A State Championship

Featured Replies

Well it had a little more drama than necessary in the 4th Quarter when Belfry went prevent against a never quitting Central team and the officials chose to ignore that holding can still occur despite double and triple teams on Horton LOL. I kind of felt bad for Ray as he was signaling to the Belfry staff like "What can I do to get a flag?!?!!"

Belfry just asserted their will at the LOS and had too many looks for a very gritty Central team to get in winning position. I will post much more, just got to the hotel.

I tried to tell everyone all season that #5 Derek Wellman was a special football player. Tonight was the night he showed the entire State of Kentucky what he can do against a very solid Central team. Between Wellman #28 Hunter and the usual cast of Seniors superstars the Pirates just took care of business and eventually had Central wondering what they could do as they committed essentially everyone to the run and still couldn't stop the Pirates.

Ty Scorggins never fails to impress me and though this may not be the shining example of his coaching prowess on D due to the mis-match at the LOS, he constantly made very wise adjustments and Belfry just kept counter punching him back. With an extremely young team Central will definitely still be a force to reckon with in 3A the next couple years. The Yellowjackets' #22 is a special Sophomore with great speed and ball skills.

Cannot be happier for this Senior Class as they do something no EKY has ever done. Guru once described Belfry as "Man's Town" and that's how they played tonight with the Senior big uglies mauling people in the box and the Seniors Playmakers like Catron, Woolum, and Corbett making "wow" plays.

Congrats to the Fighting Watusi's at Belfry ...a KY. 3A Dynasty. :thumb:

Congrats Belfry and in particular, Watusi! :dancingpa

Congrats to the Pirates...the KING of the Mountains!

Congratulations to the Pirates!

It never gets old. :thumb:

The first year we came to BG I asked a Highlands fan if it ever gets boring or if complacency really does sit in. He looked at me with a dead serious face, slight grin, and said no, it really doesn't.

I said to myself, yeah right. But only now do I know that he was EXACTLY right.

You're exactly right on all that you said, especially the holding at the end of the game on Central's last few possessions. Every one of our D-lineman and DE's were held on about every play. On one 4th down conversion the Central RB tackled Grayson Cook and it was within two yards of the ref. I don't like to mention officiating with regard to any game but a referee's job is to call the game as if the score is 0-0 at all times. But that didn't happen last night. Thankfully our kids were composed because they have great men leading them in our coaching staff or that could've gotten a little out of hand a la Trinity/Lafayette.

Derek Wellman and Chase Dove had monster games!

Devin Varney and Austin Woolum made some great plays, too.

And our O-Line showed exactly why they're so highly touted. Great team effort all the way around.

Hats off to Central for playing until the time ran out. Gotta respect that!

Anyone know how to get pictures from the game and not pay high prices? Would love to get a picture of Coach Scroggins and Coach Haywood together.
