December 1, 20169 yr I don't know the rule of law. But I'm guessing you can't just cancel current contracts without cause. If I had to guess he used the possibility of future contracts as leverage. The parent company of Carrier has been a Federal contractor for years. They don't want to mess with that revenue stream. It's all in the eye of the beholder I guess. I call it good business , leverage during negoiations. Whoever has the better hand can call the others bluff. For example the situation at your company in 2014. It was a smart business move by you not to call your companies bluff because you realized they had a better hand and less to lose. I don't know the situation but there is a chance they were bluffing about Korea. But you figured out the risk/reward wasn't on the unions side so you took the deal. This is just another version of a negoiation like that. And I took it as a viable threat. The exact words in the sidebar were, "I don't care if this place is blowing tumbleweeds next year and when it does it will be all your fault." Yeah, I was shook. Negotiations are over. I don't know if Trump said anything like that but I am sure we can both agree that the carrot of 3.6B whether he can cancel a current contract or not renew it is a pretty huge carrot.
December 1, 20169 yr Author I think the issue is he (possibly) gave incentives to one specific company that did him a favor. Were Carrier's competitors given similar deals? That's the crony capitalism Bipsic mentioned. You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours. As I stated earlier he doesn't have the power until 2017 to make across the board changes. But in the mean time I applaud him for trying to save jobs. I fully expect an economic package around job growth early on in 2017. You are correct if he spends his entire presidency picking winners and losers that is crony capitilism . But as a one off to show he is serious about keeping jobs I'm fine with.
December 1, 20169 yr Author And I took it as a viable threat. The exact words in the sidebar were, "I don't care if this place is blowing tumbleweeds next year and when it does it will be all your fault." I've never been in any form of negoiation where one or both sides didn't come with something that may be deemed a threat. In this case it was both sides.
December 1, 20169 yr I saved our jobs because I went back to the union and told them we are screwed if we don't ratify this contract they are shipping our jobs to Korea. You see, my union only has about 100K in the bank and Corning has multi million dollar lawyers to protect their multi million dollar company. Probably not wise for us to call their bluff. My man! Doing work!
December 1, 20169 yr Speculation. I wasn't in the meetings and I have zero proof. It is easy to see if you read the fine print. I have plenty of experience in negotiations with a business to know exactly how things go down in sidebars. The sidebars are where all the action happens. Do you honestly believe that Carrier had a change of heart with zero incentive less than a month after Trump was elected? You don't just up and decide to keep 1,000 jobs because of a change of heart. Big business doesn't work like that. I am aware of how negotiations work. Been involved in a few. If they got state tax incentives to stay, which is all anyone can find, it is nothing different than is done everyday. I'm sure you are aware Harrodsburg has given Corning many incentives over the years.

Unless I am reading it wrong the state tax incentives aren't any different than what Pence was offering them before the election. Harrodsburg has zero say in anything Corning decides to do with the Harrodsburg plant. Harrodsburg and Kentucky offer Corning a ton of incentives thus the visit to our plant by Mitch McConnell.

So Corning gets no tax breaks from Kentucky, Mercer County and Harrodsburg?
December 1, 20169 yr How do you suggest to keep jobs in this country or spur economic growth without a market that incentives it? The only way for an economy to grow is for government to get out of the way. Deregulation and allowing companies to keep more of their money. I know regulations is the oxygen that makes the Democrat party grow but it is the single greatest threat job growth and a growing economy. So if what Trump did here was release some of that unneeded burden from government then I applaud it. At the end of the day, manufacturing isn't a stagnant industry. Companies aren't shifting overseas because of taxes, they're shifting overseas because labor is a fraction of the cost domestically, and technology continues to phase out jobs at an increasing pace. I don't know for certain, but I am of the opinion that companies make location decisions with much higher weight given to state incentives than federal. In that regard either Pence held this company hostage until the election, or the jobs didn't really matter and this was nothing more than a political ploy. It's funny to me, but much more serious than a your (universal) side is no different than mine kind of thing. I don't see any difference between pay for play lobbying and you scratch my back, I scratch yours situations. This is one area where I loved Trump's message but severely doubt his authenticity.

So what your saying is there is nothing we can do to keep good paying middle class jobs in the country. I don't accept that premise.
December 1, 20169 yr So what your saying is there is nothing we can do to keep good paying middle class jobs in the country. I don't accept that premise. Doesn't that beg the free market argument. You're stifling innovation, efficiency and the invisible hand. Of course I'm not saying we should just not care about jobs, but let's say this is nothing more than a lessening of tax rates. You're still cultivating an environment, before you're even in office that political favors are the way to get things done. This doesn't even touch upon the trust my actions, not my words going on with President Elect Trump. We still don't know many of the details, but forgive me for having reservations about the most disliked man to ever win the office.

I believe in pulling back corporate tax rates and eliminating regulations that restricts innovation and job growth you speak of. The governemnt should get out of the way and let the market work. But because are business climate is so over taxes and heavily regulated a good leader will come in and relieve some of this pressure.
