#3 or 4 Seeds Left in Playoffs Round 3

Featured Replies

A stunning development

Still need to let every team in the playoffs. Anything can happen. That's why they play the games.

;)

True, though more interestingly it's the 1 and 2 from both of the Louisville districts in 6A and just the 1's from all other districts. :sssh:

I assume your talking about in class 6A alone?

Correct, I should've said 'from all the other 6A districts'

No #3 or #4 seeds made it to round 3 in 2015 either.

However, in 2014, there were three #3 seeds who advanced:

3A - Bourbon County lost in round 3.

5A - John Hardin lost in state semi-finals.

6A - Trinity won the state championship.

^ It's a bigger task than I want to do at this exact moment, but I'd be curious to see a comprehensive list under the six class system.

Anyone know the average margin of victory through the first two rounds?

I went ahead and did 1A. Major observations:

-Zero - The number of four seeds that have won a game. Essentially, in 1A, being a four seed is the equivalent of a sixteen seed in the NCAA tournament. I didn't look at the scores, but I'm not certain any have even come close.

-One - The number of three seeds who have advanced past the second round. That came all the way back in 2007, the very first year of the system. Campbellsville advanced to the region finals. Three seeds are 0-22 in the second round since.

-Zero - The number of teams not seeded #1 that have advanced to the state finals.

-One - The number of teams not seeded #1 that have advanced past the region final stage. That was Lexington Christian, making the semis all the way back in 2008.

It's worth noting that in 2006, the final year of the four class system, Newport Central Catholic, a three seed, won state in 1A. They defeated Danville, a two seed.

It could be illuminating to see what the other classes hold, but what I see under the six class system from 1A is that the gulf between the haves and have nots has widened considerably, and being seeded below a 1 is basically a deathblow to any title aspirations.

#3 or #4 seeds in round 3 or later (all classes):

2013

2A - Somerset lost in state semifinals by one point

4A - Mercer County lost in round 3

2012

2A - DeSales lost in semi-finals

5A - Cooper lost in state championship

6A - Simon Kenton lost in round 3

2011

3A - Powell County lost in round 3

6A - Boone County lost in state semi-finals by 2 points

2010

2A - Monroe County lost in round 3

2009

3A - Paducah Tighlman State Champs!

3A- Sheldon Clark lost in semi-finals (beat Belfry in round 2!)

2008

3A - Edmondson County lost in round 3

6A - Simon Kenton lost in championship game

2007

1A - Campbellsville lost in round 3

2A - Metcalfe County lost in semi-finals

4A - North Bullitt lost in round 3

5A - Oldham County lost in round 3

6A - Shelby County lost in round 3

So, only 2015 and 2016 had no #3/#4 seeds in round 3.

The football state tournament can historically be described in one word: chalk.

Thanks for doing the hard work for us, @Voice of Reason. How many of that list were 4 seeds?
