Trump and term limits

Featured Replies

No, that is obviously not what Trump is trying to do. Term limits are popular with American voters and Congress is not. Trump is just throwing another popular political proposal into his basket of goodies in an attempt to win an election. At least this proposal would not cost taxpayers anything.

I am a firm opponent of term limits for Congress because I believe that people deserve to suffer the consequences of their bad decisions. A well educated electorate would not be voting corrupt individuals into public office. I hate the prospect of a loathsome, corrupt politician like Hillary Clinton being elected to a four year term, but I would not be in favor limiting a president to a single term to prevent voters from repeating their mistakes in 2020.

I will also oppose any effort to impeach Hillary over her past crimes because those who vote her into office will know, or should know, that she is an un-indicted criminal. They also know, or should know, that Hillary is very willing to destroy evidence of any crimes that she may have committed. Electing her will constitute a pardon for all crimes that she has committed and may yet commit prior to election day, IMO.

Do any of you oppose term limits?

If so please explain why.

Sorry, Donald Trump. Term limits for Congress are (probably) never, ever going to happen. - The Washington Post

Suggesting this is he trying to tank the campaigns of the Republicans who don't support him?

FWIW, I don't completely DISAGREE with Donald on this, but it will never happen, and definitely won't happen in his first 100 days.

No Constitutional amendment could be ratified in 100 days, let alone something with this much political opposition. I could see him pushing for it in the first 100 days, but to your point it is impossible to get it done that quickly, if ever.

I'm undecided on term limits which might be as close as you get to finding somebody here completely opposed. Frankly I haven't given the issue too much thought as its likelihood is so small. I just think there are probably unintended consequences that the knee jerk response of opposing term limits ignores.

Three potential issues come to mind. 1.) For members of the House, with two year terms, there will forever be a learning curve until the next representative comes along to start over again. 2.) Without the prospect of winning another election, we very well might see more corruption and nepotism. We already see second term presidents pardoning political allies at the end of their terms and pushing their more partisan agendas. 3.) We might have even more gridlock. It would be much easier to stall and wait for members of Congress to move on depending on how the political winds are turning.

Again, I'm undecided. I know what we have now has MUCH room for improvement, but I don't know if term limits would be the magic fix we like to believe that it would be.

I do. They're not needed. We HAVE term limits. It's called "get out and vote..."

But, I don't think it's the end-of-the world if they are added. Just much more important issues in my mind.

I think term limits is just a popular buzzword, and I'm not a fan of putting them in place. As was mentioned, we have a check in place---voting every 2 (for the house) and 6 (for the senate) years. If there are corrupt, or ineffective leaders in those positions, it's the voters fault. Also, there are good members of Congress. Why force a good member of congress out of office?? In all honesty, I just don't see how term limits would get get rid of corrupt officials.

I'm against them. I think the limit on being president should be eliminated.

I am absolutely in favor of term limits. Incumbents rarely lose. Once you are elected, you can likely stay as long as you want. I want limits, but I do value experience and want good legislators to stay.

I would have a 20 year total limit on service in Congress. I would have a three term limit on the Senate. In other words, if all your service was in the Senate, you can't run for a fourth term that would put you over the 20 year limit. I would let someone run for Senate if their term carries them past the 20 years if they have not served 3 terms in the Senate. If you are in the Senate and your term will carry you past the 20 years, you can finish your term.

Serving as President does not count against the 20 years.

This term limit plan allows top legislators to serve but not stay forever.

Think corruption and nepotism are bad now? Wait until congressmen have only a few years so they start using it to set up their post-political careers.

I'm against term limits and it's primarily because I think it will make corruption among politicians and rent-seeking by large corporations and political power groups worse and not better.

Points to ponder there Getslow. I think a short period of term limits feeds your points more than my 20 year limit plan.

A longer limit would definitely help. And even now it's easy to appease those seeking influence and turn it into a post-political career if you happen to lose your seat. It's still miles behind the insane revolving door of the regulatory sector, which is the most remarkable thing in American politics.

I agree with this. But, at times, sadly, I think we have to be protected form ourselves. Hence a need for term limits. But in theory, yes, it really should be - this guy/gal is corrupt as heck and we're voting them out.

My feeling as well.
