Trump and term limits

Featured Replies

Change the House term to 3 years (way too much time spent on getting re-elected). Max of 6 terms for them and max of 3 for Senators. 18 year limit for both.

I do. They're not needed. We HAVE term limits. It's called "get out and vote..."

In a perfect informed world that would work. The problem is that as long as a corrupt or bad congressman can provide something of substance to the party leaders back home, they will ensure no one of substance runs against them in the primaries. There are many districts, both Red and Blue, that will almost always vote in the candidate from a particular party. That's how we end up with people getting re-elected over and over, when the rest of the country knows they are horrible.

While the power in those districts may stay with the same party just as it does today the hope is that we would transition in at some point "Better" people to those jobs and not just career politicians.

While some have said that this would lead to nepotism and corruption, that's what we have now.

I like that line of thinking, but I'd go 4 three year terms for Congress and 2 five year terms for senate. Additionally I would go 1 six year term for President.

What I like about 1 six year term for the President is that the President doesn't go into office and 30 months later have to start running for re-election. Additionally EVERY member of Congress and Senate would come up for election at least once during the President's term. The President would have six years to execute his/her vision for the country, then go to the house.

One might argue the Trump corollary. The status quo might be severely flawed, but burning it down can potentially be much more scary.

Or a vast improvement.

In theory I like the 3 year terms, but it will never fly. That would create off year elections with maybe just House seats up for vote in many states and add a lot of cost running those elections.

Or a vast improvement.

Both are certainly possible, but I think it might be naive to think the removal of a constraint will automatically lead to less self-dealing.

As would it be naive to think it will get fixed or in any way better by doing nothing.

This is a moot point, I don't ever see congress pushing forward an amendment to limit their own terms.
