Must have moved back from 2A to 1A for some period of time and then back to 2A. Multiple titles at Beechwood's expense. Thought incorrectly last year was 1st year in 2A. Wonder how many years they were 1A?

Mayfield was in 1A from 95 till 2015. Mayfield has way more weapons than your average 2A team. CAL has one thing going for them if they were to meet up and that's home field advantage but I'd say that's about it.

I've been waiting for some "meat on the bones" conversation about 2-A. DeSales or CAL would have the tough task of defeating a top 3 team and then the #1 team just to GET to the state championship, where it appears they would face much stiffer competition than in recent years.

 

Here's my honest take - in two of the past three years that DeSales has beaten CAL in the regional final, CAL had the better team (especially in 2014). DeSales' coaching staff is elite, and I think that has played a major role in the playoff victories. I also think there is a mental aspect to this. When we jumped out to a two TD lead on CAL last year, you could almost sense the "Oh no, not again" mentality.

 

All that being said, there is a king of the mountain here, and we all know who it is. I just hope the Colts get the chance to even the score with Mayfield. That would mean we jumped a BIG hurdle.

Mayfield has won 12 state titles....6 in 2A. I like Mayfield's chances real good this season....but it won't be easy.

 

Absolutely not. Mayfield is assured two home games, but they could face a playoff path of at Owensboro Catholic, at DeSales/CAL, vs. Danville/Newport Catholic/Lexington Christian, etc. in the finals. Mayfield is the favorite, but they will absolutely have to earn a title this year.

Traveling to Owensboro and then Louisville is a picnic compared to the Louisville and then Fort Mitchell trips of the past, STRICTLY speaking from a travel standpoint.

CAL has been right on the cusp of greatness but DeSales has had their number in the playoffs.

 

I think this is the year they break that streak and then they end Mayfield's dominant run in 2A.

I think they have a decent chance but I think this is the best MF team in a while not to mention that 2 others of equal or close caliber are road blocks being DeSales and OC.

 

I have MF as my favorite, this should be the best team MF has had in a few years but the winner, whoever it turns out to be will need to be good and lucky

It was more art than science. Call it a gut feeling.

Well, CAL has done their part so far, one big hurdle cleared.

OK....here goes nothing. This year's CAL team is the best 2-A team I've seen in the last five years, with the POSSIBLE exceptions of DeSales' 2013 team and this year's Mayfield squad. They are big and fierce in the trenches on both sides of the ball, and they will have the two best players on the field. I know how popular that opinion is going to be with the Cardinal faithful, but this should balance it out. I think Mayfield will win the game due to championship experience. This should be a classic - perhaps the best game of the playoff season.

CAL is marching on, this was the biggest hurdle. They are expanding their empire.

 

You will find that spouting off about who you're going to beat on an internet forum is far easier than lineing down and going toe to toe with the heart, fortitude, passion, and tougher than nails grit that is Mayfield football. It wouldn't be the first time that another team's 'this is the year' became a stamp on a MF player's ring.
