@rockmom, great post. And while I know this gets things a little off topic, I thought you might be interested in an article a friend of mine wrote that describes many of the things she's enocountered in the male dominated world of advertising.

Wow! I can completely commiserate with her! I am often called difficult and opinionated. I'be been called a lesbian or a female dog because I refused to get romantically involved with men I work with. I had a coworker force himself into my room on a work trip. I went to the lobby to sleep in a chair and left him in my room. A former boss told me that I'd never be good for anything but being someone's wife and making babies. A guy came up to me in a bar and told me I had "baby birthing hips". I had a boss decide I needed to wear only black because colors were too distracting when I wore them. As I left my last job, I was asked to train my replacement, who was offered my position, with no experience, at 10K more than I had made..because he liked "computer stuff". Those are just the things I will put into words. I still struggle with a few other things that have happened of a physical nature. And I've had to help my daughter through the degradation of being treated like Trump feels is acceptable. And when I say help, I mean I have at times had to hold her and keep her from hurting herself from the shame she feels. It's been over 10 years and she still succumbs to those feelings from time to time. If people would open their eyes, this culture is all around them. But most just want to pretend it's not there.

Then help me to understand how in another thread you wouldn't ask why a 15 year old girl would be out at 4am in the morning.

 

Because she's a runner. I see runners out at 4 and 5am all the time when I'm walking my dogs. Nothing at the time the comments were posted indicated why she was where she was. I don't, though, automatically assume the worst. Knowing what I know now, I get what the question was. But I didn't have that info then.

I'm publicly announcing that not one person who has excused or minimized Trump's comments has surprised me. Disappointed me, though, because I thought there may be a chance that they were decent human beings. But I know one poster who has no problem with his comments has not 1, but 3 daughters.

 

I have spent almost my entire life trying to find reasons why many men are crass, mysoginic individuals. Until I started dating, I was never exposed to men like this. My father wasn't, and I am the oldest of 4. My brother is the baby and 16 years younger than me. He doesn't treat women this way, even around his friends. My uncles were always respectful, as were my cousins. But I learned they are anomalies. In dating, in the workplace....men like this are more common than not.

 

I once came across an I'M conversation that my son and a friend were having about a girl, and it contained this kind of "lockerroom" talk. I was mortified. But I confronted my son with it. I made sure he understood how what he was saying was not innocent, pointed out that he has a sister that boys might be talking like that about. I made him tell me how it would feel if he were that girl and he found out that someone had said things like that about him. It was a long, intentionally uncomfortable conversation. Because if you can't talk to your mom about it, it's not right. My daughter in law tells me she fell in love with my son because he was a genuinely caring, loving, good guy. I may be delusional, but I like to think that talk helped male him that way.

 

When you have to help a female family member get through an assault or rape, come talk to me. If you are female and supporting Trump, maybe you've been lucky enough to not encounter either verbal or physical assault or rape. Thank God. It's something you never fully recover from. And thank God that you were never denied a job or a promotion because of your looks, or your gender.

 

And for all who will attack this post...bring it on. Not a damn one of you has walked in my shoes as a female.

I don't have to agree with their views, or yours. And you don't have to like me, and I don't have to like you. But we all are fortunate to live in America where we will be able to pick our poison.

I wasn't talking about you. I didn't even know you had daughters. And I'm glad they have the right to vote and the right to choose who they think best represents their views. I don't have to agree with their views, or yours. And you don't have to like me, and I don't have to like you. But we all are fortunate to live in America where we will be able to pick our poison.

 

Like I said above, Ill take you at your word. We are good. I will also say I have never tried to sway any of my childrens votes. They can make a sound decision on their own. All are college educated and in the professional world so they dont need me telling them anything.

I figured you could relate based on what you've posted. And to get things back on topic, it's posts like yours and articles like my friend's that clearly point out why it's crazy for people to downplay/ignore Trump's statements regarding women. Unfathomable.
