Summer Ball... Is Cal onto something?

Featured Replies

Coach Cal mentioned this week that there should be August Basketball as there is Spring Football. He mentioned having maybe 10 practices and a game or two against international teams or teams not on the schedule, over the last couple of weeks of August.

I know Baseball, Football, Softball all have out of season practice and/or scrimmage games...so why not Basketball too?

Several basketball media people have discussed this idea this week and most seem in favor of it.

I am not sure why anyone wouldn't be in favor of it.

I like how Cal mentioned that it probably won't ever happen since he was the one that brought it up lol.

August is too late for it to be like Spring football. Would need to be in May or June, IMO, but it would only help teams.

I think the reason for August is because nothing else is going on. May and June are all about the draft and NBA playoffs. Basketball wise nothing going on in July or August.

It would more of a preseason thing than being just like spring football.

That makes sense.

They aren't going to do it when schools aren't in regular session. That would make summer school mandatory, and I don't see the NCAA agreeing to that...

What percent of college basketball players go to summer school? Asking because have no idea.

before they started allowing summer workouts most went home for a month or two and maybe enrolled in the last summer session if they wanted to get ahead of things. Now most do because you need to be taking classes to do workouts. If they went to full scale practice being enrolled would be mandatory if it was during the summer...

So as you say, most are doing it now.

It may never happen, but I don't this would be the reason it didn't.

Baseball season extends way past the end of the year...all winter sports have games when there are no classes between fall amd winter semesters.

Students get three extra credits and the NCAA gets to televise extra games. Sounds like a win-win to me.

The ruse has always been that student athletes were free to work side jobs in the summer to make some extra money. Make summer mandatory, and that built in defense goes away. Would be a potential disaster in future litigation...

You need a better argument against basketball practicing 2 weeks at the end of August...considering football practice starts the first week of August. So the NCAA does not care about football players practicing in August, but there would suddenly be some possible legal ramifications if basketball did it?

Zero reason they can't practice in August, if football can.

Are you just against it GT, if so that's cool. I would be interested why you are against it, if you are.
