Covington Catholic 20 Highlands 19 (Frosh)

I thought Mayer fumbling at the end of the 2nd and handing the birds a TD and the lead, would have gave them all the momentum going into the 2nd half, but it did not.

CovCath is beginning to stack strong freshman classes on top of each other. Bodes well for the future.

This senior class was the one that broke the 10 year long Frosh losing streak to the Birds. They've won 3 out of 4 now...time to convert to Varsity wins.

RCC9 I've watched both these teams in 3 games each this year and see my prior post in cov cath / highlands fresh predictions if you want my reasons.

I missed the Birds first TD. Got there as they were kicking off. I didn't feel like sitting in the rain so I left when CCH went up 14-13 early 3rd.

HHS offense didn't do anything in the time I was there. QB looks decent. Nice zip on some of his passes.

I'm pretty sure CCH turned the ball over on 5 straight possessions. It's possible I missed a drive where they didn't but...it was ugly. Drove the ball fairly well. Fumbled once in the red zone. Fumbled to trying to run out the 2nd qtr and Birds ran it in for their 2nd TD. Fumbled to open the 2nd half. Fortunately for them, Birds turned it over to them a few plays later.

Note that this was before it started raining so weather was not the issue for the 5 TOs I saw.

I'm guessing weather was a problem after that.

Still shocking to see how few players CCH has. Record enrollment for the frosh class and they have 25 players.

Updates I got....Birds marched down the field opening drive and Huddleston dove over the top from goal line to take 7-0 lead.

On 4th down CovCath's Mayer was apparently hit in the backfield but broke free for a 60+ yard run to paydirt. 7-7

Birds Zach Lewin picked up a Mayer fumble with 16 sec left in the half and took it to the house to put Birds up 13-7 ...xtra point no good and would come back to haunt.

Not sure of the rest of the scoring in the game as updates stopped when lightning delay started. I do know Birds had a couple fumbles and an INT.

I know Jack Delegrange of Highlands had 2 interceptions in the game also.

Mayer's TD was about 72 yards and it was on 3rd down. Showed more speed than I realized he had.

How much time was left when HHS scored their 3rd TD?

Zero reason this birds team should be 3-3.

Take nothing away from CCH they went out and won that game. Congrats to that good group of boys. It was nice to see a couple of the boys on both teams shake hands and show respect to each other as the game was expiring(before the handshake at the 50).

Heard play calling was very bad for the birds. I seen poor playing calling the last 2yrs that cost the Birds the game against Covcath's frosh. I guess it happened again this yr. But its frosh ball and it looks like this rivalry will continue to be a good one.

Makes sense it was 3rd down being 72 yards.

Those lights are horrible!

Too LOW and the noise is obnoxious!

The Junior class beat HHS as Freshman as well, in a similar one pt game. So, if the senior class did win, then it's 4 in a row. However, none of it matters if it ain't happenin' on Fridays (or maybe Saturdays). That's what they're all preparing for - this is just prologue.

Sorry about that. Safe travels home.

2016 CovCath 20 Highlands 19

Would trade em all for a varsity win. And, you need to consider that if the HHS coaching staff was better, CCH would have probably lost 2-3 of these games. Because any other explanation is simply impossible to fathom.
