I agree that right now, some of the local big schools are very good and will have good success against the smaller area teams. But being able to beat up the little guys while consistently getting whipped by like sized opponents, will not get a team much respect statewide. And while teams like Ryle and Simon Kenton have had a short strech of quality teams, they have yet to prove that this is sustainable, long term. I am not saying that it is not, just saying that if things revert to historic norms, it is more likely that we will see the smaller schools climb back to the top of the mountain sooner rather than later.

The NKY big schools are the best schools in NKY now. The only problem for them is they have teams like Trinity, St. X, and Male waiting for them. Which usually one of those 3 Louisville schools are not only the best in KY, but usually in the top 25 in the country. So its a little easier said than done for the bigger NKY schools.

 

That is a bit of a defeatist attitude regarding the local Bigs. I would hope that with the number of bodies that these teams have to pull from, they could come up with enough athletes to compete down-state.

The conversation is a state title so history will suggest that HHS/CovCath, Beechwood, NCC in that order would be the most likely. Speculating the near future, Beechwood changing classes would definitely lessen their chances. By what I'm hearing, HHS will not be down for long.

Regardless, there is still BG & possibly Mayfield standing at the back end of any run from NKY at present. Despite great strides from 6A schools in NKY, they are not at the level with Louisville powerhouses yet, BUT, they were a stepchild a couple of years ago and now have 3 in top ten, certainly starting to get into the conversation.

HHS or Beechwood is my choice for next....BTW, just because BG might whip HHS this year does not equate to the next yr or several years regardless of who they have coming up, a lot can change in a year or two. BG will be good no question but everyone else isn't standing still...............

Minus two teams in Louisville I think several NKY 6A teams have faired well with like sized schools. They have not always won but they have been competitive against them. NKY has 3 teams in the top 10 of 6A most if not all of the last 2-3 years. The next step is definitely to start competing with the big two. Hopefully we are closing that gap.

Yes, but that leaves 33 to 34 like sized schools that NKY 6A is competing just fine with. Again there is still growing to be done to catch the top dogs but your original post talked about all like sized schools not just the elite 2 or 3.

I think Beechwood could do it this year, if not, next year is a very good possibility. I think Highlands will have a great shot in two more or same could be said for Cov Cath potentially. Outside of that, it's tough to know. As far as this year goes, Newport Catholic would have the next best chance , but it will be steep with Mayfield and far more of a loaded 2A class this year, which also includes others in NKY.

Smallest 32?...How exactly does it work for football? Cantrall rankings this week has 27 in 1A, 35 in 2A, 41 in 3A, 40 in 4A, 38 in 5A, and 32 in 6A. That is 213 schools with football and my old math divides that by 6 to give me 35 1/2 teams per class. Are this many schools opting to play up out of their class?

No. I haven't seen Cantrall's list but there are actually 33 teams in 1A and 32 in 6A.

Only 2 of the NKY 6A are capable of beating the majority of the class. But those two are still not at an elite level and a State Title is likely not happening anytime soon for either.

Scott has a good chance as long as they stay at 4a. Loads of talent that just needs to be polished and a softer side of the bracket. Just have to get through 2016.

 

Id say the same for Ryle, SK, and Cooper. One of they will get through to a title game in the next 3 years. You have to get there to have a shot at winning one.
