Penn State is Commemorating Joe Paterno's 50th Anniversary

Featured Replies

Disgusting and despicable.

They should be ashamed and embarrassed.

Seems like we just discussed this.

Did we? I must have missed that.

Yeah, there was a thread a few weeks back, but it's occurring this weekend, so seems relevant again IMO. :thumb:

I thought Penn State did the right thing by firing Joe Paterno.

I don't have a problem with them honoring him this weekend.

It doesn't bother me.

No problem honoring a dude that turned a blind eye to sexual abuse against children for almost 40 years ago?

Not really. My first reaction to it wasn't disgust in him turning a blind eye to his friend behind a sexual predator. I do understand the disgust though and by the same token if they chose not to honor him I would be fine with that also. I guess I am indifferent on this issue. I don't have a problem either way.

One of biggest stains on Penn St.'s reputation coming out of that scandal was the obvious implication that reverence for "the program" superseded morality. Sandusky's crimes were known within the institution and a lot of administrators - Paterno included - passed the buck or quietly swept it aside for fear of the harm that would befall the football program if these revelations became public.

The institution endured its relatively mild NCAA punishment and spent enough money to appear contrite, but now with all of that in the rearview it would seem they are ready to go back to the Old Way. I don't believe their cancer has been eradicated.

As I said in the last thread...

I again want to reiterate, the story is not that wins were restored, it is the fact that Penn State fought so hard to have wins restored in the hopes of absolving Paterno. That was a high priority for them.

PSU has been waiting for the day to bring back Joe Pa reverence. Why don't we give it a few more years to let the dust settle?

The phrase "tone deaf" comes to mind. Not sure this is worth the terrible PR hit the school will take again for bringing up the Sandusky issue.

I don't understand why they want to do it. If you are a Penn State fan, you know that Joe Paterno was a very successful coach and that should be enough. I agree with Clyde that the publicity alone will muddy up the waters---and it all gets rehashed, like we are doing right now.

Nothing honorary about Paterno or anyone else on the coaching staff after all that was uncovered. The victims must feel great about this.
