I'm guessing Highlands played in some early season bowls, too, because the linked website shows Dayton as the second game in 1970, 72, 75, 77, 79, 81, 82, and 85, although most of those years start with a different team so they obviously weren't home-and-home games with those teams.

Interesting, I looked up Highlands to see what record they finished with that year. They were AA state runnerups in 1966 and AA state champs in 1968 but went 6-4 in 1967. I bet that was a big upset at the time. Of course, Dayton was the A state champion in 1966.

That is true. There were seasons where they opened up on the Recreation Bowl (or maybe other bowls); however, there were many years where Dayton was the first game.

Can say with certainty that 81 and 82 seasons, the opening game was in the Recreation Bowl against Franklin Simpson and Christian County

How about Ludlow Baptist winning the second-half season of the Ludlow-Bromley Church Softball League 10-0 over Ludlow Presbyterian. Not surprised they won, but to to shutout Presbyterian was impressive...
