August 19, 201610 yr Baylor, Worthy, 'Nique, Havlicek? Stats aren't kind to Scottie compared to those four. Defensively, he compares favorably, which is enough to move him ahead of Hondo and Worthy, but Wilkins and Baylor are in another league. I wish one of the old heads on the board would give us an objective breakdown on this subject. I take him over Nique. Don't know enough about Baylor's all around game.
August 19, 201610 yr I take him over Nique. Don't know enough about Baylor's all around game. Baylor: 27p/13r/4a career avg. No 3-point line. Wilkins: 25/6/2 32% from 3. Pippen: 16/6/5 32% from 3. When I don't know much about the player, I look at stats first, then teammates. Baylor is well ahead in stats and well behind in teammates, though he did have The Logo and, eventually, Wilt. Defensively, Scottie owns the other two, and played his role just fine. I still can't put him ahead of either.

August 19, 201610 yr Baylor: 27p/13r/4a career avg. No 3 Pippen, in my mind, was the overall superior player to Wilkins and COULD have done closer to what Wilkins did offensively if asked/needed to. But that wasn't his role for the majority of his career. Far superior on the defensive end as well. If you are trying to build a historical championship team, when it comes to the sf position I think you take Pippen over Wilkins, and the team will be better for it. Now, if you have lock down defenders at the 1 and the 2, maybe you can take Wilkins and his offense. But you have a lot better chance of Pippen scoring 30 and locking down his guys, than you do Wilkins scoring 30 and locking down his.

I thought Wilkins was one of the most talented players I have ever seen. You take Pippen out and put Wilkins in on those Bulls teams and I think they still win six championships. You put Pippen on the Hawks teams that Wilkins played on, I think they win zero championships. I actually liked both players a lot for different reasons. I just think Pippen had the "luck" of playing with Jordan and Wilkins did not.
August 21, 201610 yr I think that you are being way too harsh on him. He was a shut down defender and an integral part of SIX title teams. His versatility helped the Bulls start, probably, one of the tallest and longest lineups of the past 25 champions. He isn't in a league with James, Bird, or Irving (Dr. J), but he's, IMO, the 4th or 5th best SF of all time. I always laugh when people down play Pippen's career. He is a top 5 player at his position all time. Outside of the LeBron he is the second best defender at his position ever and not to far off LeBron on defense.

I just think Pippen had the "luck" of playing with Jordan and Wilkins did not. I don't think so. Wilkins had to dominate the ball, he would have had to defer to Jordan and not gotten as many touches with the Bulls, and would have been less effective I think. Then you give up quite a bit on the defensive end with him playing instead of Pippen. The Bulls might have been able to win a few championships with Wilkins, but I don't know that they win 6. My feeling is if they did have Wilkins during the Bulls first run, they would have shipped him off looking for someone like a Pippen who would be a better fit with Jordan and willing to play "second fiddle", which Pippen was more than happy to do. It's all about fit and chemistry, and I don't think it would have been there with Wilkins.

August 22, 201610 yr Author Ok, so right now we have potentially taken off Bill Walton, added 6-7 guys, and talked about the overrated Scottie Pippen. Give me some more removals. The only ones I know are on the list is LeBron, Kobe, and Duncan. The next tier for debate is Wade, KG, Iverson, and Durant.
August 22, 201610 yr Author Stats for most of these guys is going to be solid, relative to their times. I think you start have to looking at intangible impacts these players had on their teams and the league.

My first post removed 6 of the guys I had never heard of, or, in Lenny Wilkens' case, only remember being on the sideline. I'm more than open to being educated on why they belong.
August 22, 201610 yr Kevin Garnett has gotten no pub at all on this. He is in, IMO, when you look at the total game the guy had.
