August 10, 201610 yr PCRO has no electricity and no access to the building. Will not be a show tonight.
August 10, 201610 yr Official: No sulfuric acid leak from Falmouth derailment Update, 1:40 p.m.: The CSX train that derailed Wednesday morning in Falmouth, Kentucky, is not leaking sulfuric acid, according to officials from the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet. John A. Mura, director of communications for the energy and environment cabinet, told The Enquirer Wednesday afternoon that the rail car with the acid is not leaking, but another car containing fatty acid is. "A 3-person environmental response team is on its way to the site and should be there very soon," Mura said. "They will work with the first responders on scene to make a detailed analysis of what has happened and what needs to be done."

Ironic that this train is within sight of the Griffin Center Ampitheatre no ?

August 10, 201610 yr Citizens Notice: If you had a flight in or out of the Greater Falmouth Airport, all flights in and out of the airport have been shut down..... International airport?
August 10, 201610 yr International airport? Limited departures, but yeah, Falmouth International....I suspect that they will be backed up with angry passengers tomorrow
August 10, 201610 yr Looks like the derailment is right about where 4th St and Park Street intersect. There is a side track right at the derailment site. I wonder if that switch to that side track may have caused the problem.
August 10, 201610 yr Update, 2:45 p.m.: Whether acid is leaking from a derailed train in Falmouth, Kentucky, and how long the town will be shut down still wasn't known. There's conflicting reports about whether there's a sulfuric acid leak, Pendleton County Emergency Management director Mike Moore said. "That is the initial indication, but we do not know that for sure," Moore said. Officials have no idea when they will reopen streets. The derailed train took out power to most of the town, leaving people without air conditioning on one of the hottest days of the year. Flour Creek Christian Church has opened its basketball gym as a shelter. Moore urged people who need any help to call the EMA office at 859-654-6540.
August 10, 201610 yr Wow. On a side note, I pulled out of the the Alexandria mall today and saw a 9 on your side news truck. Followed him south thinking he would take me to the Zika outbreak here in town. When he whet past the grants lick turnoff I figured he was going elsewhere. Guess I know where he was headed.
August 11, 201610 yr What caused the derailment? I heard they suspect a sticking handbrake on one of the cars.
August 11, 201610 yr I heard they suspect a sticking handbrake on one of the cars. Wow, didn't realize a hand brake could cause a derailment. Since it was a "hand"brake should someone have checked it? I have no idea how any of this works, except for what I saw Denzel and Capt. Kirk do on Unstoppable.
August 11, 201610 yr Wow, didn't realize a hand brake could cause a derailment. Since it was a "hand"brake should someone have checked it? I have no idea how any of this works, except for what I saw Denzel and Capt. Kirk do on Unstoppable. The handbrakes are used to keep a car from moving when it is not attached to engines. They are applied using those big hand wheels on the end of cars. When one sticks and isn't detected it can cause the wheel not to turn and be drug down the track. Since it is metal on metal it can get real hot real fast. It can cause a flat spot on the wheel due to metal buildup and eventually even cause the wheel to disintegrate. There are wayside detectors along the track to notify the crew of a hot wheel temperature. One of my trains last week was stopped by one of these detectors and the wheel was so hot it was glowing blue. It was also caused by a handbrake. Luckily we caught it and set the car out for repair.
August 11, 201610 yr If this happens 500 feet sooner, these train cars are colliding with a school building. Could've been a major disaster.
