Judo medalist beaten up and robbed

I got money on the boxer

When I was in the Army in the mid 80's, I was stationed with a guy that was a top notch martial arts competitor and had won some sort of Armed Services tournament championship, had also competed in the European championships and did very well in it. This was probably late 70's time frame for him when he was doing this. Anyway, we were talking one day, and he told me if he had to bet on a street fighter who had good hands and could box/strike going against your average martial art's black belt dude, his money would be on the street boxer any day, every day. Now remember, this is from a martial arts guy.

For the record I'm not talking about boxing, I'm talking about fighting. This guy didn't lose a judo fight, he was beaten up and robbed

My best guess is the guy suckered punched him. If you're walking toward someone and unsuspecting of his intent a sucker-punch could completely stun the victim for a few minutes, or knock them out.

This had to be a sucker punch. Gi or no gi, if a blackbelt level Judoka gets squared up with you, a common thief, he will eventually get his hands on you. From there, the only question is how long until he throws you. He may have also been drunk as has been stated that would have made him less aware of surroundings.

I don't care how tough you are, you take a good shot when you aren't expecting it, no amount of martial arts is going to win the day.

You have to ask yourself why (at least one of the reasons) the martial arts came to be. And one answer is so that little man could beat up big man.

This is what I try to tell people about fighting a boxer. I can't box a lick but I'll take my chances against a featherweight.

If we are talking about some Joe schmo at his local Judo club, sure. Not an Olympic level athlete.

For some reason, when I read what folks say they would do this thread, "Danger" from Million Dollar Baby comes to mind.
