July 30, 201610 yr I didn't read the article, but in general I am all for strict dress and behavior rules, etc. in our schools. Bring back school uniforms I say. When my kids were in school I would have loved that. Uniforms are the great equalizer.

July 31, 201610 yr My two daughters and one of my son-in-laws are educators. All of them are white. I've seen all of them wear cornrows. All three agree with me. Leave those kids alone!
August 2, 201610 yr It wasn't until my senior year in high school that guys were allowed to wear T-shirts. Up till then it had to be a shirt with a collar. Didn't matter if it was a flannel shirt, a polo, a button down, it just had to be a collared shirt. There weren't any hair rules that I remember.
August 2, 201610 yr I can't even get it to open on my phone. Still, the biggest hair I've seen at South Oldham is a freshman soccer player who has the most giant afro I've seen in a while. He's lily white with great big hair. If I had hair, I'd totally grow that. So, I guess I still don't get the racial issue. Maybe I can open the article at home and make sense of that part of it. I had a massive afro my senior wrestling season.

August 4, 201610 yr I have not read the article but as a teacher and a site based member I can fill in a few things. Most schools have this in their dress code. The school might not have the same examples but in general most schools dress code hair policy is worded pretty close to the same. By law once your school reaches a certain level of diversity your school council must a minority representation. This person could be a person from the minority or someone to represent the minority. I'm going to guess and say the policy is an old policy that has never really been rewritten. Councils usually go back and review and rewrite policies every few years. It makes you wonder about the minority representation on the council and why they never brought up the issue. Many schools that have these policies do not enforce them. You'd be surprised by what's in many school policies that schools no longer follow or enforce even though they are suppose to. Oddly, it appears that they updated the policy this year to add the specific examples that were causing the most concern. Story compares last year's policy to this year's policy at the very end and shows difference. Clearly someone wanted to tighten things up for the upcoming school year (in apparently a new or updated building since it appears it is under construction this summer) and picked some very bad examples of what would constitute violations of the "new" hair policy.

August 4, 201610 yr I don't know anyone from Butler but would love to know what incidents that they had in the past that resulted in the original hair policy (that has now been overturned.) Rules like this don't appear on a whim. I've been working registration at my school for the past three days. On day one, a young lady came in with corn rows that had been died a dark red. My first thought was "it's a good thing that she doesn't go to Butler." Then, the official registrar that was working with me told her how beautiful her hair was. Yeah...I'm in the right school. #south #GoDragons
