July 15, 201610 yr ...have homemade dessert. And they don't HAVE to have banana pudding, but they get extra marks from me if they do as I think that is a staple that goes with good bbq. Pecan pie, chocolate pie, coconut crème, cobbler, etc., some combination of these should be found at a good bbq joint. Place here in Frankfort...bbq is...uhhhhhh...so-so, and they have no homemade desserts. They should be ashamed.
July 15, 201610 yr I don't think Eli's in Cincinnati even has a dessert and there only about 7 menu items in total. But it is AMAZING
July 15, 201610 yr I think all true BBQ restaurants need to have either a statue or a picture of a pig somewhere by the sign.

July 15, 201610 yr Yep, its...ok. The building itself is what kills it. It looks like a fast-food place because that's what used to be there. BBQ joints need character as part of the atmosphere.

A place like red State BBQ kicks its butt when it comes to pork.

Walt's BBQ on Colerain Avenue in Cincy used to be a fast food burger joint...and it is awesome. Every good BBQ joint should have great collared greens, solid mac'n cheese, and the best baked beans. Also need runny pies and big pieces of bread. Obviously the meat goes without saying...and a GREAT brisket is a big plus.

However, if it ever comes to pass that I start my own BBQ restaurant, don't expect desserts because I can't bake. And I don't think my mom who's approaching 70 is interested in a new career, which means I have to try and learn her stuff. Baking's a precision sport, and I cook by feel/gut instinct.
July 16, 201610 yr Eli's - just placed an order today to pick up turkey and pork BBQ for a birthday celebration on Sunday. Ordered some jalepeno cornbread also. Very good food. Making a dessert here.
