Summer vacation plans. I need help!

Featured Replies

I am in the early stages of planning a big family beach trip for next year. Usually, there aren't many of us and we just get a hotel room on the beach. Next year; I would like to plan a house for about 10-13 people. My parents who are in their 70's, my sister and her husband in their 50's, me and my 2 daughters 16 and 18, my nephew and fiancée mid 20's. And maybe a few other people. We are looking for a beach and maybe a pool. We would probably fix breakfast and lunch at house and go out for dinner. Don't really need anything entertainment wise other than that. We are open to any beach including Michigan. Most of us will be driving from NKY.

Any recommendations from people who have a booked a house or even a large condo for a big family/reunion trip. Any particular houses you have stayed out that you would recommend?

My family has done a big vacation every year for the past 10 years or so. 20-30 in one house or a duplex style house!! Do you have a particular budget in mind? It can be extremely difficult to find larger houses for big groups at a reasonable price. You are ahead of the game so you should be fine. I'll go back and see if I can find the places we stayed.

We didn't really set a budget. Obviously going to be more than a hotel. I have only rented one house and it was in Outer Banks for my honeymoon 20 years ago. I think it was about $1200 for the week and we were a street away from the beach. I looked at Airbnb and VRBO for for outer banks and gulf shores and the prices range from about $350 a night to $1500 a night. We are going to split it (probably 4 ways) so looking to spend about $600-$900 per family for the week. So I guess no more than around $4k for the week for a 4BR or a 3BR with enough sleeping arrangements. That being said, cheaper is better but if something is nice we could go a little more.

I know there are some cool little beaches in SC, NC, and GA that I have never heard of. And plenty on the gulf side too. And have seen some cool beaches on Facebook of somewhere in MI that intrigues me also.

VRBO is the best site I have found for this. Just put in your specs and you will get results.

Last year at Ocean Isle, NC we had a 4 bedroom/4 baths two kitchens for 3500 third week of July. Right on the beach.

Just got back from here last week. 13 hour drive. Private house with an elevator private pool private beach. Beautiful clear water in the gulf. Good local restaurants 10 minutes away. Very quiet beautiful and peaceful area.

This brought back memories. The best vacation I ever went on was to a place similar to this, sans pool and televisions.

I should have married that girl...

Absolutely agree.

If I'm looking for a condo or house I always use VRBO.

I've been using it for years and have never had a problem.

Check out Gulf Shores , Alabama.

Plenty of houses to rent in that area.

We have a winner! Great site. May look at Airbnb as well.

VRBO is great.

Years ago, my in-laws bought a condo in Vero Beach Florida. It is a snow bird place and summer is considered "off season." We love going there in the summer. Lots of great restaurants with no wait. Stores have great sales because crowds are down. It is not a place to go for crazy night life, but it doesn't sound as if that is what you want.

We took out young kids there, and have great family memories. No T shirt shops, putt putt, and trinket stores on every block. Just beach, pools and sun.

Look into it because there are a lot of beachfront places that are good deals in the summer. If you decide to go, pm me. We have been going there for years and I know great places to eat.

Hilton head island, call palmetto sands (I recommend 7144 Harbourside II), book a shark fishing trip with Outcast Charters

Fort Meyers Florida is also a good place to go. We rented a house there a few years back. Very reasonable.
