Other side of that coin is this generation you could say is required/expected to put in more time than any that have come before them as well. Stuff never stops. Summer? What is that? June "workouts" 3-4 days a week. Three full weeks of July is now for practice 5 evenings a week. School starts the 1st week of August...some places August 1st.

 

Fact is...when you add up all of the other things they could (and, let's face it..should be doing during those times of the year) be doing...it's just not that attractive.

Tearing down the projects took some kids away as well. As has been stated, people are being forced to leave so that Newport can become more of a commercial center. Add to that that housing in Newport isn't going to get any cheaper as gentrification is starting to cross over Monmouth St. and towards the westside, and the population base is going down. What Newport Independent has to do is figure out how to get the kids of the people living in the East end to stop sending their kids elsewhere. It will take time to erase the stigma of Newport being a "poor kid" school with too much distraction via violence and interruptions.

Undefeated Newport teams can't compete in playoffs

 

Some parents are outraged because their sons' undefeated football teams aren't allowed to compete in the playoffs.

 

 

The Northern Kentucky Youth Football League voted to suspend Newport's organization after three of the city's four teams finished without a loss.

 

"The problem is we're winning, (and) they're not," said Dorien Cosby, coach of the Newport Firefighters. "They don't like that."

 

League officials said Newport's teams used eight illegal players, including players recruited from outside the city.

 

But parents said all teams do. Mykah Cooks played on a waiver, and he said that was never a problem until his team started winning.

Where are the kids going? Didn't Newport have to replace the projects with low income housing scattered throughout the city? Is enrollment down at Newport? I don't think it is up in Bellevue, Dayton, Holmes or NCC? Less kids period now a days. Folks can't afford to have them and still have the lifestyles we all love.

I have heard of 2 kids who are very good football players at Highlands not coming out this year as Sophomores. One is focusing on Baseball and the other from what I have heard straight up said he wasnt interested in all the practices and 10am JV games. LOL

That pop warner gig folded. Fact of the matter is, most of those kids weren't going to Newport, so Newport wasn't going to invest in them hence why the now Newport youth program was formed.

I still say kids are working harder than ever at sports. Year round lifting programs, at home film study with Hudl, spring ball, early summer practice. I think it's misconception that kids are lazy and spend too much time indoors. The reason you don't see kids playing outside is because they've always got some organized sports activity to do.

 

At some places, yes, I agree. At Newport, that's nowhere near the issue. It's hot, it's hard, practice in the mornings. The kids just don't want to do that and make that kind of commitment.

No drive or dedication down there motivating these kids to put the time in for Friday night pictures.

True....and it's a shame, there are some very nice athletes roaming the halls at Newport that could, with the right motivation and guidance, be playing at the next level.

Or maybe in some of these towns, the motivation to play a game comes in second to other things. Many times, some of these kids have to grow up very quickly. Broken families, the need to work to earn a living....some just don't have the time to fit football into that schedule.
