I went to the zoo yesterday, and I honestly kept thinking how easily it would be for me to get in just about any exhibit. I could have easily:

 

Played with the sea lion in his pool.

Jumped in with 4-5 crocodiles in the Reptile House

Taken a swim with the polar bear

Laid on rocks with the black bears

Ran around with the rhinos

 

At some point, we have to take responsibility for ourselves. I'm not sure I agree with your last statement. It was an unfortunate incident, people need to quit making it out to be more than it is.

I agree. I just don't know who you could fully prevent everything from happening and still have a zoo.

 

Apparently a strong willed youngster has re-defined new boundaries! Nothing like toddlers dictating policy...

 

Happy to hear the deceased endangered species has a quality sperm bank built up. What a re-deeming thought! Cue gas face of sarcasm...

It is funny to me the difference in cultures.

 

MrsC and I went to Barcelona last year. While there, we went on a tour of Montcerrat. A large group of us along with our guide took the path up to the Cross of San Miguel.

 

Beautiful isn't it.

It was amazing how horrified US people were that there weren't barriers and layers of protection.

 

The tour guide told them that yes people have fallen to their death.

 

Then told everyone, in this country, you are responsible for yourself and for your children. It is perfectly safe for anyone to walk up and back. It is not a dangerous path. If you don't want to fall off don't go near the edge.

I don't think anything should be done to the parents. They are stupid for not being more observant in a situation where a child could be abducted or any number of bad things could happen. But I don't think they should be punished.

 

I also don't think the zoo should be fined or punished. They provide an incredible experience. And IMO, there is no way to get hurt, unless you try.

I saw a nice post on facebook so it has to be true. 309,271 petitioners have signed a petition to make sure the mother is held responsible for her child/gorilla. 19 juveniles were arrested this weekend at the taste of cincy and no one is crying out that their parents should be held accountable.

Which sucks. That exhibit was awesome. The additional construction they do, whatever it may be, will most certainly take away from the experience. All because after 40 years a parent couldn't control their child.

 

So theoretically....

 

A father makes it a habit to keep a loaded pistol sitting on the end table in his living room. He raises two kids in that same house, preaching to them their whole lives on respecting the inherent danger in a firearm, and handed out stiff punishments when the kids ever got anywhere near the pistol.

 

40 years later, the same man has his family over for Thanksgiving. The same pistol is sitting loaded on the same end table. His 4 year old grandson, whose father had never chosen to own firearms, gets too curious about the pistol on the end table while everyone is in the kitchen cleaning dishes after dinner. Kid shoots himself.

 

Who all is at fault here? Certainly the man who left the loaded pistol in his end table, right?

That would be a comparable scenario if the gorillas were simply out in the zoo able to interact with the public. Since that's not the case, your theoretical comparison is beyond weak.
