I am not a daily BGP user, but taking advantage of a lazy Tuesday evening logged in to see what was going on in spring sports. Here on the softball forum, I see “PHS 35 Augusta 0” forum and it looked like it had a lot of hits/posts on it. I am from a nearby county and starting reading the posts. Am I missing something here? From checking out little Pendleton County on KHSAA, they have never had a successful softball season, most games in past years only went 3 innings, and yet they are being hung at the cross for defeating Augusta? There is only so many things you can do to keep the score down without making it more embarrassing to the losing team. Is there much difference between 21 runs to 35 runs, when you are not trying to run up the score, but you haven’t reach 3 innings yet? And this is a high school varsity sport not a little league. The posts triggered my interest in that it seems like there is some bad blood or some have it in for the current coaches and/or athletic director. Pendleton County’s roster says 5 out of the 15 players are middle school age girls. Someone posted that they don’t even have a batting cage, which leads me to believe there is not much support for this program, but yet this young team and 1st year coaches are being scorned badly on here. I checked the football scores of Pendleton County for the past several years, and see they were defeated 70-0 and 79-0 by teams like Highlands and Cov Cath. Were these teams ridiculed on BGP for not rolling over and playing dead on the field, even with a running clock? I doubt it!

Welcome to BGP. Nice 3rd post for just rolling around reading and found this thread. If you read the entire thread, you would have seen the posts about what Pendleton County could have done and didn't. If you have seen much of any softball you would know how you don't let this happen.

15 is the run rule. More could have been scored. In these types of games, you get to the run rule then make the adjustments. However, in this game, adjustments were made prior to the run rule by putting in JV pinch hitters. Once the JV pinch hitters got a swing, HHS stepped off the base to end the inning...still with bases loaded. So I don't think anyone that knows the game would think 18 is an issue. Double that is an issue for some folks.

 

HHS only batted twice and the last half of the second inning were JV hitters.

And then how was you comment about 18 vs 35 connected to your opinion on "creating outs"??

There's no easy way to go about helping a bad team but you still have to do something.

 

Some teams do not mind the opponent doing the "step off" method. I did work one game this year where the losing coach was mad that the winning team took this approach. No guarantees.

 

My solution:

 

Obviously you have the reserves in as far down the roster as you can go.

You tell them to run until they either score or until they are tagged out. That way the defense is not as embarrassed as the step method. They will have earned the out. If they can't stop a runner from scoring when the runner is essentially saying "tag me" then that's on them. IMO it's better than the "only go one base" approach. That just prolongs the agony and you still do not get to the third out.

 

I can't see any losing coach being upset with this approach. If this approach is a problem then you need consider disbanding the program.

Id rather offend the losing coach than demoralize the players ( if the coach doesnt like the " step off " gift )
