Darrell Griffith: How good would he be in today's NBA?

Featured Replies

High school or college junior and senior seasons?

College. Reportedly placed folding chairs the length of the court and weave dribbled between them.

I think a decent defender would sit on his right hand and make him a role player.

Just in that brief video posted above you can see him go left, spin to his left and crossover to his left...I think you are selling him very very short in saying that he would be a role player. Injuries cost him an entire year and he was never the same after that...but those first 5 seasons he was a stud.

And only one of those clips showed him finishing (nicely I might add) with his left. I wouldn't dare say anybody who's ever picked up a ball could guard him, but an NBA defender would surely pick up on his tendencies and shut that down.

So no one in the NBA back then could figure out how to play defense? He scored 20 a game for 1st five seasons...you know, they played D back then...they could actually touch the players and everything :lol2:

I'm not going to argue about if he could go left or not, I think that he clearly could or at least enough to get past a defender sitting on his right hand. Once you spin left away from the defender no reason not to finish with your strong or right hand.

Reminds me of that old Ty Cobb quote. He supposedly said to a reporter that he'd only hit .310 in today's game. When asked why, he said that it was because he was 72 years old.

Papa, I was going to bring up a very similar quote attributed to Ted Williams when asked how he would hit the modern day pitchers. He was only in his sixties when he was asked and I believe he said he would hit about .260...

The difference is that Cobb was joking...I think Williams was serious:lol2:

Considering scoring and fg% were both higher in 1980 than they are now I'll assume next you'll tell me the game was pure back then and it wasn't about the money.

No just basically disagreeing with you that he would be relegated to being a role player now. He would still be quicker and more athletic than all but a few players that would try to check him in today's game.

Wow, wonder why no one ever figured that one out?

It just seems guys like Griff and Unseld would be players all UofL fans would know about.

Anyone that calls themselves a UofL fan and then doesn't know Griff and Wes are 1) A Disgrace and 2) Frauds.

Do you ever recall John Stockton finishing with his left? Guy played darned near 20 years and couldn't dribble with his left. Signature move if guys overplayed his right was two quick dribbles with the left then crossover.

I am not a UL fan but definitely know who they are along with other UL greats.

Lots of youngsters these days can't see beyond their own nose and don't care about the past.

Plus, modern medical technology and training techniques might have made it possible for him to come back 100 percent after the injuries that thwarted his career.

At 16 ppg and a 1:1 Assist to TO ratio, it looks like they did.
