Not a total surprise if the student population only has 8% African Americans (as of 2012), which is apparently less than they had in 1972.

In the United States 8% is the current national level of those indentifying themselves as solely African-American. Thus, Dartmouth is not out of line with national norms.

Generally speaking, neither do I. This particular incident shows nothing but ignorance on the part of supposedly well educated youth, and typical northern attitudes about Kentucky. It is insulting.

 

This is exactly right. The Northeast upper crust typically views anything west of the Alleghenies as "hayseed" territory. My friend in Connecticut said his kids only laughed when he suggested they apply at our alma mater in KY. He explained that anything not Ivy League was considered unworthy, settling for second best, and would be an embarrassment.

I stumbled into (actually more stumbled out of) a unique find in Milwaukee a couple of years ago. The Copperstill Bourbon Bar.

 

Was staying at the HI next door for a quick 1 night trip and was looking for dinner and across the parking lot is a Bourbon Bar. They had signs for for theiir Derby party when the open the patio. When the owner ask why I was there (everyone else seemed to be a 'regular') and found I was from Kentucky - he had to impress a real Kentuckian with his selection - on the house of course. It was good thing the hotel was just on the otherside of the parking lot.

We don't know. All we know is a party that offended some people was canceled and now folks are outraged. No specifics on the party. No specifics on past parties. We know absolutely nothing other than a southern themed party was canceled at Dartmouth and they changed the theme to a Woodstock themed party. At this point it doesn't matter. Damn those offended people and their sensitivities.

The sorority is free to do as they choose. But, I must say........as a country, we are becoming more and more PC, and regardless of what our resident leftists and apologists think, it's not a good thing. Want to shame and ridicule someone? Just accuse them of racism,and they are forever branded, and looked upon with more disdain than actual criminals.

I seem to recall the president of UL having a themed party and folks got mad about his party. We had some idea of his "theme" when they posted pictures. We truly don't know why the offended are offended. We are just assuming it was harmless fun and we really don't know one way or another.

The bold is what is so ironic, particularly in this thread. We have no idea who was invited to this part or what happened at it. Yet, the default opinion is that it's nothing and the sorority is being too "PC." I don't know enough about the situation to decide one way or the other on this one.

I would say there is a big difference between being offended and annoyed. These protestors annoy me with some of their behavior. It doesn't offend me.

 

When a kid says he doesn't feel safe on campus because someone wrote in chalk "Trump 2016". It's annoying.

 

In the articles it states why they were offended. The derby represents pre civil war southern culture. It states the reason , we aren't assuming. Again these children aren't intelligent enough to realize the first Derby was in 1875. Until this moment I'd never heard anyone associate a Derby party with racism.
