I would think if something had happened it would be mentioned in the story. What we're left with as an excuse is that it is "apparently a racist and elitist theme"? Apparently??? It also relates to "pre war southern culture"?

I would say there is a big difference between being offended and annoyed. These protestors annoy me with some of their behavior. It doesn't offend me.

 

When a kid says he doesn't feel safe on campus because someone wrote in chalk "Trump 2016". It's annoying.

 

In the articles it states why they were offended. The derby represents pre civil war southern culture. It states the reason , we aren't assuming. Again these children aren't intelligent enough to realize the first Derby was in 1875. Until this moment I'd never heard anyone associate a Derby party with racism.

 

Actually I have. The race baiters in Louisville a few years ago got their knickers in a twist when the police shut down cruising on Broadway on Derby Eve. Never mind that business owners and residents of the area hated it, and never mind that there was violence and drug activity associated with it, it was an event predominantly attended by African Americans so shutting it down was racist in their eyes. In the weeks leading up to the Derby that year many of the supporters of the cruising event described the Derby as an exclusionary, elitist and racist event.

In this particular case or the Gap ad or students upset over people supporting Trump I use a statement I use in the business world. When in business there is saying if everything is top priority or important then nothing is a priority or important.

 

In this case if everything you disagree with offends you then nothing truly offends you and a real cause is lost.
