Ankle brace question

Featured Replies

I've had bad ankles for a long time. Dating back to an old basketball injury. I keep rolling and spraining it and it puts me out of commission for a few weeks at a time.

I wear one of the normal tie up/wrap around braces but it's even giving out with that on now.

Does anyone have any advice, besides surgery, that will give me the best shot at preventing this in the future?

You probably pulled ligaments making your ankle very vulnerable. If your doctor will send you, physical therapy may be helpful. If you know an atheltic trainer, maybe he/she could recommend exercises and/or a good brace.

I feel for you brother. Had a nasty, level 3 ankle sprain in October 2014 and it still doesn't seem right. I don't often turn it like it seems you do but it still isn't 100%. Working down at the ball park last year I'm sure didn't help.

This! Need to strengthen it and a PT can advise of the best brace for where you are the weakest.

I'll check the one I have tonight, PT recommended it.

definitely need to strengthen it as well as work on your ankle mobility/flexibility.

You are correct that's what I did, years ago. And now I'm very susceptible to it just giving out like this.

I guess I need to go see someone.

McDavid is as good as it gets for braces, but PT to strengthen it is your best bet

That's what I have.

We always used the Donjoy brand and had great results.

Throughout my high school days, I sprained my left ankle countless times and just relied on a brace for support. Junior year during the playoffs I had a bad sprain, while wearing a brace and cleats spatted, that pushed it over the edge for me. Went to the doctor and, to show me how loose the ligaments had gotten in that ankle, effortlessly slid my foot in and out of the socket (one of the more uneasy feelings I have ever felt.) For the remainder of the year, and all of my senior year, had to wear tape, brace and have cleats spatted for that ankle. It was like playing with a 10lb brick tied to my foot. Ended up having complete ankle ligament reconstructive surgery. Definitely feel you pain on this one. Unfortunately, if it is bad enough, I am not sure that anything short of surgery will "fix" the problem. Therapy might be a band aide temporary solution.

Some DIY exercises that I did to build ankle strength are balancing using only the affected foot, one legged weightless squats using the affected foot, and bought one of those inflatable stability discs to balance on.

Good Luck

Your going to have to try different ones. Ive broke both my ankles in my day so I have to wear a brace pretty much every day. Ive gone through 10-15 different types in my day. Make sure you look at ones that stabilize well. The one I have currently has the stabilizing inserts in it on the sides of the ankle that really help.

Its similar to this, but its not an ACE brand.
