This needs to happen at a few schools in my opinion. Not saying anything bad about Dawn at all, at other schools just watched to many alumni play their kids and good friends kids without paying much attention to anyone else.....

 

Let me tell you a little secret. The #1 thing that coaches care about is winning. You can take all the alleged nepotism, politics (although I never knew what that mean in relation to coaching), or other forms of favoritism and put them aside. Coaches want to win. They play kids that give them the best chance of winning.

I don't get the whole "NewCath is a nepotistic, political machine where your last name determines playing time." Sure, I don't like the in-house hiring process because it rules out the possibility of hiring an exceptional outside candidate, but it seems to be working for NCC for the most part. Has for decades. Let's do a case study on everyone's favorite last name - Pangallo. Since 2004 by my count 5 Pangallos have played jv or higher. Three of those ended up starting PG. The two who have graduated play/played college basketball. The third and current started games this year infrequently and was never over-used, even though his grandfather is the head coach. I just don't see anything there.

Heck, assistant coaches have voluntarily made moves to avoid directly coaching their kids in some capacities on both sides (Jeff Ware on the girls, Ralph Meyer, Sr. on the boys, etc...). Politics are always going to creep into high school sports. I just don't see any real evidence to show that it happens at a greater or alarming rate at NCC.

If you truly beleive what you just said, you are as ignorant to the situation in SOME schools as the coaches are who don't see the other talent they have. I don't believe this to be the case at NCC. but others and myself would love to see some other schools hire from outside the area to get a coach who has no ties or relations with anyone.

I agree... Not sure what this has to do with this thread.. But glad I got my ACT prep class completed - and can now tell you if 3 Pangallos played JV/Varsity.. How many Kellys and Collopy's will it take to play football?..

It's been on multiple threads here through out the years but it's been brought up a few times here, as it always is when a coaching vacancy comes up on the hill. It's portrayed as being worse as other places and a large part of the perception I think comes from them not hiring outside of house.

The name may seem like it is favoritism but I think its safe to say that they have earned playing time look at the history. Is it implied that the name is attached with Zimmerman's, Kelly's and Bonhouses and I am sure more because they are all from the same family because those as well have earned playing time as well.

I think you're wrong friend. As a coach, teacher, parent, and fan in more than one NKY school I am telling you that coaches care more about winning than anything. Yes we always say "winning is secondary to building character in our athletes" but the truth is "we want to win." We may be wrong is assessing talent. We may overlook some players ability. I have been guilty of thinking that certain players were better than they actually were. Had nothing to do with politics or favoritism. I played those players because I thought they gave me the best to win.

A kid usually becomes a favorite because they work hard, listen, understand their role, etc. They may not be the best athlete or have the most talent, but a lot of times these other factors become more important than true talent. I think the ultimate goal is to win and though some coaches do wear blinders, their intention is to put the kids out there that they feel gives them the best chance to win.

Completely agree. Not all but a lot of the ones that claim name gives players playing time don't see the fact that their kid is not as good as the ones playing.

"Favoritism" generally comes where two kids are pretty equal (and usually role players). Coaches view one kid one way/others view a kid the other. Whenever it "goes to the judges" like that, somebody is going to be upset. If it is a kid who is from a family close to the coach, then conspiracies will abound. I have been a part of that. I sat behind a kid in college who looked the part, our production was very equal, but the DCoordinator recruited him, and my recruiter left after my Freshman year to be a head coach elsewhere. There was favoritism, but not to the point where I could fault the coach b/c the guy ahead of me was just as good if not better than me. I didn't win the position. In those circumstances you have to leave no doubt that you are the best option.

You are right. Newcath the past 4 yrs record was 117 wins to 16 loses that is a incredible stat if you ask me. Coaches want to win players want to win Parents want to win and the Fans want to win. It's all about the W's.

Watch enough games and you will see it is a fact. When numerous other coaches, high school and AAU, ask why joe Smith is playing all the time and Jon doe is not, and they all know that Jon doe is the better player, then something is wrong!

Then you tell them that joe Smith is a relative of the coach, or freinds son, then it all makes sense to them.... I'm not looking at this on a one time basis or from a parents view.
