50 Greatest Programs in Kentucky History Part III (11-20)

Would Paducah be top 10 with a state title?.....

They are 26 points behind #10 so it would take more than one state title; probably would take at least two (their state tournament wins would obviously have also increased had they won a title).

Tilghman is the highest ranked team without a state title in my rankings; Danville is the second highest a #21.

Research my friend! :sssh:

Actually, there is a fantastic website a guy on BGP runs that has all the past tournament scores (I'd link it, but I'm not at my home computer) and there was a book published a couple years ago with the same information. I compiled that into files at home - I've got every tournament scores for every school that has ever existed in Kentucky.

I was trying to determine what the score for Apollo would be using your format. From what I could gather online they have 9 regional championships and 7 state tournament game wins.

I'd also be interested in Owensboro, but I fully expect that they will be included in the Top 10 rankings once you release them.

Owensboro will be on tomorrow's list. I'll check on Apollo when I get home, although I'm a little surprised about them. Apollo is one of those schools that I tend to think of as being really good forever, but that isn't necessarily the case.

Apollo has only been a high school since 1972, so they have a bit of a disadvantage as compared to some of the other schools across the state.

I think maybe more weight should be placed on State Tournament appearances, wins, and Region and State Championships. It appears that Paducah Tilghman gets their ranking based on District Championships rather than Region or State accomplishments. I think that may say more about the district than the dominance of the program (nothing against Paducah Tilghman). Just looking at how they get ranked.

23 Regional Championships. That is impressive.

Also means they have been to the state tourny 23 times and have yet to win it.

Lafayette - 6 state titles in (4) varied decades & not in top 10. Huh?

I thought that would happen to Apollo; as longevity is an important component, they suffer. That also may be what keeps Ballard out of the listings, as it also has existed only since the 1970's. Few would argue that it is a top notch program these days, but it may be kept out because of its limited number of years.

Not many can say they have been there 23 times.

Yeah, 12th place really stinks. Too many empty years for Lafayette, though they are victims of a tough district and region. Hard to account for that in a math formula, but it hurt them.

When did Maysville HS and Mason co consolidate?

I believe it was 1990/91 or 91/92 school years.

1990-91 was the final season for Maysville. They lost the district championship to Tollesboro, 110-107 in double overtime, then lost the regional final to Harrison County 92-90. And as an aside, Tollesboro would close in 1994.

Apollo has 11 district titles, to go along with the 9 regional championships and 7 state tournament wins, as you said.

On a last second shot.
