Tim Couch Was Almost a UT Vol

Featured Replies

Matt Jones had Tim Couch on his most recent podcast. Interesting interview.

I didn't remember that Couch had originally committed to UT. His dad was not happy with it and they got into such a big argument that Tim went down the street for about 4 days to live with a buddy. When he returned he decided that if it was so important to his dad then he would commit to UK but with the option of leaving after one year.

First year, as many remember, was a disaster as Coach Curry tried to run the triple option with him. So he was ready to transfer to Tennessee after the season. AD CM Newton asked him to hold off on his decision until he hired a new coach.

Enter Hal Mumme. Couch met with him and the first thing Mumme said was "You're my starter and we're going to throw it 50 times per game." Couch was staying.

He said he would have loved to stay for his senior year but he figured since UK was losing almost their entire O-line and Craig Yeast that he would do nothing but hurt his draft stock if he stayed.

Funny Hal Mumme story: Coach DiNardo from LSU made some comments about Mumme not taking the job of being an SEC coach seriously. Said he wasn't cut out for the SEC.

UK went to Death Valley and had a Saturday night game. Mumme and Couch were in the lockerroom game planning when Mumme told the student manager to go buy a hot dog and put every topping they have on it. Teams go out to warm up and Mumme is chomping on a hot dog when he went to shake DiNardo's hand. Couch said you could see DiNardo wasn't happy. UK won on a last-play FG.

He said UK was the only school that told him he could play football and walk on the basketball team. Remember that Couch scored 3,000 points in high school. He said because he had already made up his mind to transfer (before Mumme was hired) he didn't pursue walking on. Then he became the starter and found out how important football was to his future and decided to concentrate on football.

Really good interview.

Really good interview.

Thanks for sharing that Clyde, really interesting stuff.

I've listened to a few of those podcast...the ones I've listened to have been pretty good. I was planning on listening to this one tonight.

He also said he would love to be a college coach but he isn't willing (yet) to move his family around while he builds up his resume. Two young kids at home.

That's an awesome story. I remember hearing once that he almost went to UT, but did not know the specifics of it.

Does he still live in Kentucky? I know awhile back his house in Lexington was on the market.

I think he is/was building a bigger one.

Best athlete to attend UK in the past 25 years? Many thought he could have started on the basketball team and scored +3000 varsity points in HS.

Better than Anthony Davis?

Started on what basketball team? The 96, 97, and 98 UK team?

I'd say Randall Cobb has proven himself to be a pretty good athlete. Couch was great in high school, and was a great college QB, however, Cobb can do it all and plays at an All Pro level.

I never saw Couch play basketball. I know he scored a ton of points, but can anyone who saw him play describe the type of player he was?

He described himself as a good shooter - 2 guard.
