Considering Gary Johnson for President

Featured Replies

Since I'm not exactly enamored with the Republican candidates for president and I think Hillary and Bernie are even worse, I'm seriously considering voting for a third party candidate. Of the candidates I've looked at, I like what I see so far in Gary Johnson. Now, I haven't had the chance to thoroughly evaluate him, but so far he's the leader.

Can those of you that know more about him, in your own words, tell me why he's the best candidate? What about him makes you feel he should be our next president. Also, those that think he isn't the right guy, tell me why. I'm leaning toward Gary, I would really appreciate any info others have. Why or why not vote for him.

I'm voting for Gary Johnson for a couple of reasons.

I like that he is a republican governor who has a proven record of working with democrats to do the right thing. I think that track record is important.

I am mainly voting for him because the American political system needs a viable third party candidate on the ballot. I'm hoping that by casting a vote for Gary Johnson that one day the numbers will allow for a third party to emerge and be a threat to the two party system. In order to make things better there has to be groundbreakers who fall on the sword for the future choices of our kids and grandchildren. I want my descendants to have better options than what we have now. Because of that reason alone I am voting for Gary Johnson.

Thanks, PP92! I appreciate it! Good points on working across the aisle and on getting a viable third party.

I voted for him in 2012 as he was the least objectionable candidate running. With me his status this time has risen to rock star status compared to the big two yahoos. Along with that PP92 nailed it that if we want sanity back in our elections we have to send a clear message to the DNC and RNC that there are options out there. I hope that breaking their stranglehold will someday benefit our kids.

This.

Man, a sensible thread. I agree with all of it. Thinking I'm gonna do the same thing.

There are a lot of things about Johnson that I like...

Supports 2nd Amendment

He strongly supports the FairTax which eliminates Income Tax and replaces it with a 23% National Sales Tax

Thinks that a portion of Social Security should be privatized.

Would repeal Obamacare.

Huge on personal privacy.

A couple of things that could be troubling...

Johnson is for raising the retirement age to 70 or 72

Would lay out a system for the states to follow to declare bankruptcy...do we want the state to file bankruptcy, especially if you have a state paid pension?

Says he would cut ALL Federal Spending 43%...military, welfare, education, infrastructure...Everything cut 43%

Here is a good link with his positions...Gary Johnson on the Issues

Seems to me with the social media campaign that can be ran, if the correct strategy was implemented a candidate could get a sizable portion of the electorate. At least enough to garner attention and make a difference.

I favor his retirement age increase, although 72 is too high. When social security was enacted the life expectancy for a male was about 60. It's now 73. The full retirement age for those born after 60 is now 67 so an increase to 68 or 69 would help. Combining that with a higher wage base and means testing would go a long way to shoring up social security for the future.

If Gary Johnson can get on the debate stage in the Summer, I think he might be able to get a lot of traction.

So just work until time to die...that will save a lot of money for the Government.

He got almost 1% of the vote last time...might break 1% this time.

I seriously could see him getting to 5% if he can mount an actual campaign.

Needs to average at least 15% in the polls first.

If Trump and Hilary are nominees, it's not too far fetched that could happen
