Second biggest Rivalry in the regular season?

Featured Replies

I am going to have to call shenanigans on 10,000 people. How many does War Memorial hold? To give you a reference, Roy Stewart (Murray State) holds 16,000; War Memorial is not even close to half the size of Roy Stewart Stadium. None-the-less, still a good rivalry.

I would say the Tilghman/Mayfield is a solid #2 choice for the state.

You would be wrong on the shenanigans as the numbers that I gave on the people inside the gate were taken from the athletic departments from both schools on the number of paid tickets that were sold from season ticket holders and those bought at school and at the gate that night...plus there were were people buying tickets throughout the night. Granted War memorial stadium is half the size of Roy Stewart Stadium but when you take into account the standing room only crowd...not only around the field but also on top of the seating section and the tailgating crowd in the softball field adjacent to War Memorial stadium. So when you add all of those together plus the regular seating capacity that is where you get the total number. Not counting couple of hundred people watching from outside the fence for free with their own tailgating party.

I would agree that for many Cardinal faithful that the Tilghman game is the rivalry game based on tradition, but for intensity and crowd participation the Mayfield-Graves game has slightly gone ahead in that regards.

But this is what is great about high school football as every team has their rivalry that they think is one of the best in the state!

GO CARDS!!! :fight:

Yeah, I know the least we have ever had to the game is 8000 fans.

Nice, and it was written by a St. X grad too, but still this rivaly is just a little over half as old as the Mayfield/Tilghman rivalry. It may draw more fans, but that is a given since Louisville is 10 times bigger than Paducah.

I don't remember the publication, but I want to say Sporting News also ranked it as #1.

But, be that as it may, this thread is about the 2nd biggest rivalry, and I'd have to give that to Male/Manual for the length of the rivalry and the number of fans they draw. Similar to the St. X/Trinity game, it's draw is bigger than the two schools. It draws the community.

Maybe Prep Nation? Still looking...

Locally yes, but I wouldn't rank it as a top rivalry since they are in different classes and thus no post-season matchups possible.

So Danville/Boyle and Bowling Green/Warren Central aren't big rivarly games?

Does anyone know the all-time records to support these claims? I think a true rivalry is time tested and head to head record supportive.

What is the head to head record with St X and Trinity?

32-28-2 with x holding a 4 game advantage.

My post includes all the varsity games.

Mayfield vs. Paducah Tilghman, began in 1911. Lots of famous stories come from this rivalry, the credit card story, the clock story, the game where a single player scored all the points (3 Mayfield, Paducah 2, In Ripleys Believe it or Not). Even the first game, both teams historical records show a winning record. I would argue this is the biggest rivalry in the state, it made it to ESPN once, lol.

It would be in the running for second best.

Of course they are big. I attend the Danville/Boyle County game every year.:D

I used the expression "top rivalry" not "big rivalry". This thread is about the 2nd biggest rivalry in the state, and imo rivalaries in which the teams are in the same class, giving rise to playoff ramifications, are the top ones. But, then again, this is just my opinion. As other BGP'ers will tell you, I've been wrong before.;)

You did catch the byline, didn't you? Still, I agree that it is the biggest in KY.

3. St. Xavier vs. Trinity

When these two longtime parochial powers from Louisville clash, it's a sight to

see. Last season, more than 35,000 packed into Papa John's Cardinal Stadium at

the University of Louisville to see St. X post a 36-18 victory over Trinity. The

Tigers went on to win the Class 4A state title. This year's game against Trinity

will be the 60th in the series.

The Great American Rivalry Series: A High School Gridiron Spectacular!

Jun 13, 2006 -

This year marks the third anniversary of the Great American Rivalry Series featuring the longest, largest and most competitive grudge matches in high school football from across the nation.

“We started this Series to honor and recognize 20 of the best teams, and the 10 biggest games, players and coaches from across America. This year’s games are nothing short of awesome!”

- Rick Ford, CEO

iHigh and its sponsors built the Series to recognize one of the most typical of all American traditions, Friday night high school football. In addition, the top student-athletes from each team are awarded a college scholarship and the winning team receives the Great American Rivalry Series Championship trophy. Also recognized is the Most Valuable Player of the game.

This year’s matchups include the Trinity – St. Xavier game in Louisville, Kentucky, a powerhouse contest with over 30,000 in attendance annually. Also on the slate is perennial powerhouse Moeller matching up against St. Xavier of Cincinnati and the century-old rivalry of Massillon vs. McKinley in Canton, Ohio. We will be highlighting each of these storied games leading up to this year’s Series, so stay tuned for more games, more stories and more fun. Also be sure to watch for iHigh.com’s FRIDAY NIGHT SCOREBOARD, in its seventh year in addition to the latest buzz surrounding each week’s rivalry matchup.

In your eyes, yes, but what defines "the best rivalry in the state"?

I think crowd size is only one element that should be included but not the most important. The two largest schools in the state's largest city SHOULD draw the biggest crowd. You can't hold that against a rivalry like a Fulton County/Fulton City who just don't like each other with a playoff berth on the line just about every year. I'm in no way saying FC/FC is the best rivalry in the state, but just giving an example of criteria that others view....
