St. X Raises the Radio Bar

What exactly is the first?

Last time I checked it is when you do something no one else has done! To quote Bisig Impact Group after signing the agreement for an international radio network deal for football, basketball & baseball,"we are the FIRST to develop this type of relationship in secondary education sports programming".

Amen. If it paid anything at all, I would quit practicing law and do it full time.

No need for antics. I'm simply asking a question because I can't understand what is so grand about this due to all the cheerleading.

I will ask my question again - what exactly does this radio deal do for the first time? Just because you broadcast over the internet does not make it an international radio broadcast. I believe there have been many high schools that broadcast over the internet.

If X will have all of their games broadcasted throughout the Clear Channel RADIO Network, that would be ground breaking. But I don't see that happening. Even though X has a large Louisville base, and scattering of alumni through out the US/world, I can't see a radio station in Florida (or Japan for that matter) broadcasting an X game.

I just spoke to Larry Bisig a few moments ago, and he's very excited to say the least.

The thing that sets this apart is a long term agreement for the webcasts, and radio broadcasts to be included as a package. This is really not going to change anything for fans, since they'll still be able to hear the games, but with new, and larger bandwidths, the games will not have dropouts, or buffering issues. This is also the first time a large broadcast outlet like Clear Channel has agreed to do High School Sports on such a large scale.

As for other sports..basketball will be carried in the regular season, along with some baseball at first--then an increasing number as the contract rolls on.

One other thing to note...ALL St. X games will be carried live. In the past there was some grumbling because radio didn't always go on the road, but this is not the case according to Larry.

There are many examples of school's games being on the internet, but this is the first to my knowledge with the infrastructure to handle a large scale operation, and partner with a major player like Clear Channel.

That makes sense now. Nothing earth shattering. Thanks knnal.

The press release and story in the CJ made it sound like some grand take over of the radio stations.

BTW - I hope you don't play @ eastern... ;)

Everything that you say is true but.......it would be nice if local announcers at least TRIED to sound professional.

Alum or not, if the announcers are usings words like "we" and "us" to describe the team, they are doing themselves and their listeners a disservice. I cringe when I hear that and usually tune out.

Play-by-play announcers should not be cheerleaders nor apologists. They should concentrate on describing the play, giving the time remaining, the down and distance and the spot of the ball. And, most importantly, give the score of the game. Believe it or not, many local announcers do not understand those basics.

And give the score. When did they stop teaching this in PBP 101??

I assume Mr. Bisig knows that it is up to the host school to decide if the game is broadcast. So, a number of schools fearing a negative effect on the gate could undo his claim that all games be broadcast. It isn't like it hasn't happened in the past. I also agree with RunFirst on the point that any school (and there are many that do) that broadcasts its games live on the internet can claim "worldwide international" broadcasts. BTW, congrats to X on the deal.

Clear Channel owns the stations licensed to Somerset and Burnside. Two 50,000 watt FM's (97.1 and 93.9) and a Class A FM (102.3) as well as two AM stations. They cover all of the Somerset High School, Pulaski County High Schol and Pulaski Southwestern High School sports.

So, it is not new or unprecedented for Clear Channel to broadcast high school sports.

I believe what's unprecedented is the length of the contract.

Does anybody know if Bisig Communications has the "rights" to the video feed of the T/X game at PJCS? You know... the jumbo screen video.

but with new, and larger bandwidths, the games will not have dropouts, or buffering issues. .

Can you explain exactly what a drop out is and why this will be different?

Is this like comparing dial up internet to a cable modem?

BTW, the CSAA will be working on broadcasting the Toy Bowls this year on TV, expanding what they have done via the radio.

Like I said before, WKCB has been doing exactly this for 2 years and yes I always call and get permission from the host school to broadcast from their School, and yes I have been denied broadcast rights from some high schools.I also know of other radio staions doing the same thing. Maybe being in the mountains doesn't count!

It looks as if X (Bisig) is doing what Trinity, Scott County, Brentwood Academy (TN), Henderson Co., Highlands and I'm sure a host of other schools already do...put games on the radio and provide an internet feed as well...it's a very positive thing, but not exactly newsworthy, and definitely not groundbreaking... any of these other institutions could issue a press release saying they will be doing it until 2015...but hats off to Bisig for getting all the free PR for this...

Also,

The home announcers have every right to be for their team and to be more excited about calling their own team's touchdowns...It's like listening to George Grande (Fox Sports OH) call a Reds game vs. Jon Miller (ESPN)...George wants the Reds to win, but he will second guess &/or criticize if necessary; Jon is neutral because he has no "home" team.

I think home team annopuncers become unprofessional when they act like every call that goes against them is a bad call or when they badmouth the other coaches or player.

BTW, John Spears (St.X play-by-play) does a very respectable job

As far as I know, Highlands does no such thing.
