I don't think it has to do with the parties being extreme. I think it has to do with the basic notion that the government no longer is responsive to the needs of the American people. That notion is prevalent throughout the electorate where Trump is capturing the right-wing version of it and Bernie is capturing the left-wing version of it.

 

Ideologically speaking, Bernie's message on policies resonates with far more people than his label of Democratic Socialist would suggest. Dismiss him as a "socialist", or even more silly, a "communist" at your own peril. Similarly, dismissing Trump as a bigot or a fascist is proving to be equally ineffective.

 

Any third party candidate who attempts to reside in the middle, or moderate area, is gonna do just about as well as the moderate candidates already in the race. There were record turnouts in both Iowa and NH no? And the moderates/establishment are not doing so hot.

 

Those are my thoughts, definitely turning out to be an interesting process. Plenty of twists and turns.

A lot of what's going on is the boiling over of all sorts of different things, from the disaffection of voters to the electoral system that limits choices to the gerrymandering that has attempted to rig the choices in a way that has increased polarization.

 

I think if the general election is Sanders v Trump or even Sanders v Trump v Bush/Rubio/Kasich then something has to give. Perhaps it will be a realigning election and new coalitions will be formed out of the fracturing of the parties. Maybe there will be reforms to the electoral system. Or maybe everyone will straighten up and try to find some middle ground, our rhetoric will be toned down, and we'll all take this stuff more seriously going forward. I know where my money isn't.

That's a great point and one that is not mentioned a lot...yet. The gerrymandering has made a joke out of the electoral process in many districts. Good, good point.

Yeah, someone (I believe it was a woman) at his speech said it and he just repeated. So no, he didn't actually call Cruz that.

It is interesting to think of the possibilities.

 

This election is prime for a third party. Both sides have crummy/unlikable candidates that can maybe be taken down by a third party. Only then will we maybe see actual change in the system. Maybe this election is showing how extreme the parties are tilting too far right/left, when in reality, people don't want extreme, except the mcpapas.

A totally ignorant and clueless statement by a man who wants us to elect him president. But like Trump has stated, he can say or do anything and it won't cost him votes. That is a great mandate for our next president isn't it? Just do whatever you feel like doing.

The irony is politicians have been doing whatever they want for a long time...Let's tell people what they want to hear, get elected and then screw everyone.
