Hitched back and forth from Louisville to Morehead for four years in the early 70's. I never waited more than 10 minutes to be picked up. If they dropped me off at their destination before Morehead, I got another ride quickly.

I actually picked up a hitch hiker a couple of years ago in Harrison County. I passed a car off the side of the road that was jacked up and had a tire off, went around a bend and a guy was walking and he stuck his thumb up, I ask if that was his car down the road and he said yes. When he got in, he said just drop me off at the church just down the road, I am the minister there, I was like yes , thank you God, he was very appreciative.

Truth. Seeing it in the local weekly paper didn't grab as many eyelids as hearing about it on one of the ten thousand 24-hour news channels or on social media. The more people see/hear/read something, there more likely they are to think it will happen to them. As you said, statistics don't back that up.

Have to admit, did it quite a bit in my younger days. Me and a buddy would hitch to basketball practice and back. Until one night, the guy giving us a ride lied about direction he was headed. First time he had to slow down for traffic we ditched out of the car. Never hitchhiked again after that night.

Hitched a ride once (early 1980's, Christmas morning). Car broke down with me (16) & my 3 sisters (college aged) headed from Louisville to NKY. Oldest sister and I got a ride from kinda-sketchy couple. It was very cold, we were not picky. Rode from Henry County to Holiday Inn at Carrollton exit. She & I stayed warm for an hour while other (2) sisters froze in the car (haha!)

So you hitched , then ditched a ride.

So is there anyone besides me who would still hitch a ride if you needed one?

As a youth growing up, can't count the number of times I hitched.

 

It was a common thing for me.

 

When I started driving I used to pick people up all the time.

 

Have and would still pick someone up. In the last 5 years I think I've picked up 6 people. Five times it was a motorist broke down or out of gas. Once is was a guy just trying to get from Nashville to Lima for school.

 

In this day of cell phones, road side assistance, fear, etc, you just don't see very many people hitching.

Used to both hitch and pick up riders regularly going back and forth to Bowling Green. Been years now. Couple buddies of mine hitched back from Ft Lauderdale in the late 70's. Caught a carful of girls right off the bat and made it home to BG before we did. Delivered to their front door.

I'm thinking about making me a sign that reads "Godless liberal needing a ride" and seeing how long it would take before someone accommodated me. In my county, I would say someone would try to run me over before I would get offered a ride.

I think you are right. The ability to communicate with almost anyone instantly has probably really lowered the need to hitch.

When I was young, it was very common for guys to "thumb a ride." The only girls who hitch hiked were those of ill repute.

I picked up a hitchhiker only once, about 25 years ago on the way to a poker game, she was quite the "looker" and I got to the poker game 2 hours later........the "G"
