OOOOHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! OUCH. I could take you back to the 50s and 60s but Gene had Lee County as a power the last few years winning the region in 2000 and maybe one other time. Always a contender. Badcat is right. Montgomery Co. didn't hire him for his looks.

Lee County will miss Coach Combs. The things that he has done at

Lee has been amazing. He has went to the state sectionals and won a couple All A classics. Lee County has had a powerhouse the last several years. He has helped Lee County to get a new field, increase the little league players and several player go onto the next level. Coach Combs will be a great Coach at Montgomery County. Good Luck to him.

Lee County won the 14th Region twice since 2000, has made the final eight in the state once. Lee has also won the last two 14th Region All "A" tournaments, played in the final eight this year at Applebee's Park, and has been consistently one of the best teams in Eastern Kentucky. Numbers have been a problem for Lee, a small enrollment always makes pitching a problem. Coach Combs is an excellent coach, anyone familiar with his program at Lee County will tell you he is one of the best in the area. A bigger school like Montgomery County will prosper with him in charge, I will guarantee it.

The challenge will match his size. He must be 6'4". His 3rd grade son is 5'5" and his brothers are 6'7" and 6'6". And Gene is BIG, not just tall. He lives and breathes baseball. His father in law played with my uncle in the Bluegrass League and both nearly made it in the pros but suffered injuries. His father in law struck out Mickey Mantle 3 times in one game in the minors. Montgomery County will be a top ranked team in the coming years without a doubt.

He is a great coach, and one tough individual. If he gets the support he needs from the Montgomery County administrators, he will build their program into a powerhouse.

He did wonders at Lee County with 350 enrollment.

Montgomery is very fortunate to get him.

I wonder if Gene's brother, Clarence, will be given the Lee job now that Gene is on his way to Montgomery? He has been Gene's right hand man since his first days as coach at Lee. It seems to me he would be the perfect choice to keep the Bobcat program competitive.

Gene's a great guy and will build a great team at Montgomery County. Gene's brother may be the popular choice, but, I look for someone else to take this job.

I heard that Combs may be leaving, but I didn't know if it was true or not. This is a tough loss for the Lee Co. program, but a great pick up for Montgomery CO. He is a great coach and will help Montgomery Co. I don't know much about Montgomery Co.'s program, but I guarantee that it has already gotten better.

Kudos to Montgomery Co. I think they have hired the best proven coach in the 14th and top 3 or 4 east of Lexington. To do what he has done at Lee with an enrollment of 350 students it is scary to think what he is capable of doing with a 4A school and that talent pool. Shame on Lee Co. and the administration for letting him leave. I don't care what kind of business you are in quality people like Gene Combs don't come around everyday. He is from Lee and I believe he wanted to stay in Lee but everyone needs to be appreciated and the Bobcat admin had better wake up before they lose another quality guy in Danny Wright. Good people aren't cheap and can't be taken for granted. Good luck Coach Combs. At least you can still wear your blue wardrobe. Montgomery Co. will be the new sheriff in the 10th if he stays and is supported.

FYI Montgomery County will never be the sheriff of the 10th Region as long as Harrison County and Clark County are in the 10th Region and Coach Whitaker and Coach Allison are at the reigns. Not to mention that Bourbon, Brossart, Mason and Scott are all very good programs as well. Before you give hime Coach of the Year and Montgomery County the Regional Title lets see what he can do.
