Believe me, Combs can handle it.

He is a great coach, and one tough individual. If he gets the support he needs from the Montgomery County administrators, he will build their program into a powerhouse.

He did wonders at Lee County with 350 enrollment.

Montgomery is very fortunate to get him.

 

He will get the support from the administration for sure. That's not what bothers me.

I have heard that Coach Combs had second thoughts on this job. Any truth to that? I understand that he was offered the job some 14 days ago, rejected it, and then called back and said he had changed his mind. It has caused a placement problem with teachers in Montgomery Co., that's for sure.

FYI Montgomery County will never be the sheriff of the 10th Region as long as Harrison County and Clark County are in the 10th Region and Coach Whitaker and Coach Allison are at the reigns. Not to mention that Bourbon, Brossart, Mason and Scott are all very good programs as well. Before you give hime Coach of the Year and Montgomery County the Regional Title lets see what he can do.

You don't know Gene Combs very well. Give him a school as large as Montgomery County and it's untelling what he may accomplish. I agree, Whitaker is a legend at Harrison County, but don't for one minute underestimate the ability and determination of Gene Combs. He WILL be a huge factor in the 10th region.

I agree. I agree that the Harrison Co. and Clark Co. programs have been the benchmark for teams in the tenth but to say that Combs will not put Montgomery in that mix in a short time tells me you don't know Coach Combs very well . Not to mention that Montgomery Co. has had a history of solid talent over the past 10 years that has gone untapped. I believe that if Combs stays at MC for some time then MC will be in the top 3 contenders year in and year out. PREDICTION: Regional winner in 1 of the next 4 years if he stays.:ylsuper:

Lee plays Clark County year in and year out, and plays them competitively. I would wager that the folks at Clark County, at least, will agree that this is a quality move for Montgomery County.

Has Lee ever beaten Clark?

I have tried to find some results and can't answer that. However, I am sure that most of the time that I have seen them play over the past 6 seasons the games have been very competetive. More competetive than they should be based on school size alone. 4A schools should dominate 1A schools year in and out regardless of sport and with very few exceptions over the past 10 years that has been the case.

I am excited to see what can transpire in MC with a large student body for Coach Combs to pull from. I often wonder would some of the coaches be as successful and touted as much if they were in small schools instead of the large schools they have built their reputations with. There are some great coaches in many of the small high schools around Kentucky that if they chose to go to larger schools would become the next Whitaker(Harrison) or Miller(PRP). In many cases, just competing with some of the larger schools is an accomplishment.

Harrison has never been one of the "larger schools" as they have bounced back and forth between 3A and 2A during Whitaker's tenure. Coach Whitaker has always surrounded himself with some really good assistants over the years. Best of luck to Coach Combs at Montgomery County. I know they have had some good talent recently, but not sure what their young talent pool looks like. The 10th Region plays some good baseball and having always been paired up with Lexington and Northern Kentucky makes them tough. The 10th Region Baseball Tournament is always fun to watch.

700 to 1000 kids (2A/3A) is a large school compared to 300 kids at 1A Lee. It will be fun to watch this next couple of years. Whitaker and Allison need no introduction but a breath of fresh air in the MC program can't do anything but improve the already outstanding 10th when it comes to baseball.

I agree.

Give Gene Combs those kind of numbers, give him administrative support, then turn him lose and don't get in his way. MC will see results quickly.

He is a hands on coach from Little League through 12th grade.

Little Leagues in Montgomery will be pushed like they've never been before. He will make players out of kids who didn't believe they could ever play baseball.

The 56th district is really turning out some great coaches who have gone on to bigger schools. Gene Combs to Montgomery County and Bryan Dean to Letcher County Central. The two guys used to coach together at Lee where Dean was an assistant, before he took over the job at Powell. I predict regional championships for both Letcher Central and Montgomery County in the not-too-distant future.

Is Gene's son going with him to Montgomery Co. He is like in 10th grade or something isnt he?
