Kentucky Football | Stephen Johnson, Gunnar Hoak expect to compete for quarterback job

As of today Drew Barker is the starting quarterback. New OC and new system means the door is open for Barker, Johnson or Hoak to be named the starter in August.

Anyone catch what was said on KSR today about Reese Philips? If I heard it right, Stoops was trying to talk Philips out of transferring and told him he should have been the starter but was never given a fair chance.

That came from the UK Rivals guy. He was on a podcast with Matt Jones and said "he heard" that Stoops may have told Phillips that after he announced he was leaving.

 

Not sure what would be been in it for Stoops to make such a comment but...who knows.

 

The guy had a lot of "I heard" on the podcast without much substance behind anything.

Stoops is in damage control mode, he's all about mitigating risk. I'm sure he felt Pat was the safest option, regardless of how good Phillips looked.

Zero chance Hoak will get a chance to start. Probably a RS year for him which he should be thrilled with.

Completely agree, he's more of a 2 years into the system guy and see what you have.

I just hope whoever is QB is afforded more reasonable patterns to connect on. Other than the bubble screens (which I hate, unless your Alabama), Dawson's offense was too much predicated on WR's making in-traffic catches. Conrad is supposed to be a top notch TE, yet I don't think he ran a 5 to 10 yard hitch or option route all year.

 

While I'll always root for the NKY kid, if Johnson can provide some mobility (especially in SEC games), I'm all for it. Can't be a sitting duck in that league.

I'm hoping it's Barker but whoever gives them the best chance at 6 wins I'm supporting. I have no idea who that might be.

Johnson is the veteran in legit playing time. Barker wasn't impressive at all in his opportunity. I hope it's a fair competition, unlike what Philips is alluding too. However, naming Barker the starter was a low blow for Pat and Reese if they don't go to Barker, which, in turn, isn't fair to Hoak or Johnson.

 

I need a scorecard.

Johnson went to Grambling out of HS, while I love their program, that is not the SEC...

Sounds like Stoops is already giving up on Barker?
