Austin Peay pulls offer for Ky player

Featured Replies

New coach at APSU yesterday pulled an offer for a scholarship offer for a punter from Christian Co that the coaches and AD promised the player that they would honor so he would not go elsewhere. This is all over twitter. New coach has upset many in Western Ky with this decision and will probably not have any luck in this area with anymore players. Sad decision by this new coach. Guess when you win one game in three years you can get by doing this to kids!

they offered a full ride to a punter? no wonder they don't win any games down there.

Come to think of it, a punter may be their MVP.

Unfortunate but hardly new.

This will not have an impact on his ability to recruit WKY. Kids will go where they have offers. If that's their best offer they're not going to turn it down because a punter lost his scholly.

Recruiting is a business for both sides. It is a dirty game that is played by coaches and recruits. For coaches it is about wins and losses. For the kids it about Bigger stages.

What would help recruit is they stop hold press conference with 3 and 4 hats to choose from. That is the one thing that gets under my skin how people are drawn to a decision.

On coaches side I would hate for any AD to tell a coach he had to stick with the recruits from previous coach. If that is the case shouldn't have let the old coach go.

Austin Peay just hired a new coach/new staff. They really can't afford to get started out on a bad foot but IF they have a real need for that scholarship and a real candidate for it then I can understand. Why was the old staff offering a scholly to a punter anyway?

It appears that they had to punt a lot last year and will also this year! "When you win one game in 3 years a punter is very valuable!

How can a coach tell his player to go there and commit when there is a pattern that they will not honor their word? I think as a coach that I would lead my player in another direction to a school that is as good as their word!

Again, this happens all the time, and everywhere. It's certainly not unique to APU. As Clyde said, kids are going to pick the school with the best fit and offer. No recruit next year is crossing a school off their list because they pulled an offer from a punter this year.

This happens all the time when there is coaching turnover. Sounds like quite a mess for the new coach to clean up.

So should all players have to honor their word and never decommit from a school, no matter if UK or UL offers to in state kids.

One pulled scholarship, by a new coach no less, indicates a pattern?

Who would he lead his player to then? I am sure at some point nearly all schools have pulled an offer. This is part of the game. If he had other offers then he needs to contact one of those schools, otherwise he can do as nearly ALL kickers do. Walk on and earn a scholarship the next year. The new APU coach probably saw a need and used that scholarship on a player who might play more than 3-5 snaps a game...or a player that could help them only need a punter 3-5 snaps a game. Lol.

Honoring your word is a big deal, however the new coach isn't the one who lied to you.

did not lie to me but to this kids family who are great people, I am just upset on what was done to this kid. this late in the game it will be hard for him to land anywhere as he stopped looking when they offered. also a coach can make or break a college in his school as he does not have to let them in to see his players and he can lead then to a school that he has placed players in the past, AKA Steve Pardue at UK! I would bet that there will be no love showed APSU from Hopkinsville and all of the CCHS staff and friends of the staff as there are many!
