Absurd that a candidate under FBI investigation is a front runner , for either party . Yeah Trump is coarse , yeah he sticks his foot ( feet?) in his mouth , yes he has bad hair .. but at the very least you know where you stand with him. And making our borders safer as opposed to the open border appeals to many a sane American. Might differ on other issues but national security hopefully will carry the eventual R nominee to the WH .

I think he had to come out swinging to make an impression early and he certainly did. The guy is not an idiot and is not a loose cannon as many depict IMO. I think everything he does is calculated.

 

I do agree with this, but it's also precisely why I find him so troubling. I think he knows how to appeal to a certain segment of Americans and I think he knows how to sell himself as their savior. That gives him a certain amount of power on its own; he's tapped into something unnerving about our society and he knows how to harness it.

 

To the extent his policy ideas can be gleaned, there's a strain of authoritarianism that undergirds them. His ideas appear unconcerned with the reality of how our government is designed and what constraints are placed on the office he's after. It is an equation for a crisis of republicanism: He will fix problems and he will do so because he is a powerful man and anyone or anything in his way is a weakness and he will have a gaggle of unswerving supporters cheering him on.

 

FWIW, Cruz is more frightening to me. He's more egomaniacal than people perceive Trump to be and he's far more shrewd as a politician. Trump would be up against a Congress unlikely to give him what he wants - and dare I think might fight back - but I expect that Cruz would abuse them into submission. I really don't know what Cruz would do or wants with all of that power either, but even taking his policies at face value would give us an extreme and cruel government.
