Is Bell County still a top tier coaching job?

Featured Replies

If you were a coach looking for a job where you could settle in and stay a good long time and enjoy some success, would Bell County be on your wish list?

Bell has been down a little by their standards but still very good. They have a lot of the pieces in place to win, was coaching the problem? Is that job still at top tier job?

I think a lot of it depends on how much Bell County pays under the table.

I would want nothing to do with that clustermess.

I am not sure the administration and politics at either Bell or Middlesboro is conducive to winning.

Taking the administration and politics out my answer would be "Not top tier, but a highly desirable job. Not nearly as desirable as 5 or 6 years ago".

Bell has definite benefits... you get excellent facilities, a devoted community and a sense of pride from your players, the ability to draw from a talent pool in the area, and booster money. These all make it an alluring job on a different level than most locations.

On the negative side though, Bell's Feeder System has began to slide off. I don't think a mass overhaul is needed, but it definitely will need some considerable time and effort. Numbers are down and the local economy is dwindling a bit. You also have the disadvantage of sharing a District with an ascending Corbin program under Coach Haddix. Corbin will have a five or six year jump start and their Feeder System is rocking and rolling. The other elephant in the room is having Belfry in your Semi-State who's program currently as at the most elite of levels.

I would compare Bell County to the South Carolina University job. You can maintain success and will have quality talent and plenty of support, but the slightest slip will have people thinking how the "old coaches would have done it" and your competition for post-season success simply are at a much higher level than you right now.

I assume you mean to coaches...If so do you think most coaches get paid under the table?

I think the best coaches get nice financial packages.

Additionally, I think it would be much better for everyone involved if schools were allowed to pay high school football coaches whatever they wanted to pay them and they advertised the salary.

Is it technically against the rules to pay them under the table or on the side?

This. Bell has absolutely nothing coming up. You need a nice jump start for a good varsity program and I just don't see it coming in the near future. Nice facilities, yes, but you need much more than that. They'll be back eventually, just not soon.

I really don't know. Conventional wisdom would say yes but again I don't know.

Does anyone know if the KHSAA investigates this kind of thing?

It wouldn't be a KHSAA issue it would be a redbook issue with KDE and a title IX issue

I would say not a chance of being top tier, that is unless you are from the mountains and don't want to leave.

What is the issue?

I am sure the IRS would investigate this type of thing. Every board of education I am aware of requires all income to be run through the board for tax purposes, retirement, etc. Not saying it doesn't happen...in fact I know it does, but I know it's not legal. But hey...who am I to judge. LOL

I'm with villecoach on this one. With loss of students, jobs, and the schools size I don't know that this one is a top tier job anymore. I do believe it was at one time, but those days on Log Mountain have passed. Not to say they won't have an occasional run, but IMO it's no longer a Tier 1 job...Tier 2 mountain job and probably a Tier 3 or 4 across the state. GOOD job yes, GREAT job not anymore. Not a slight in the least to those kids and community, just one guys opinion.

Not sure, but I think the right way to do this would be for the Booster Club or individuals to raise the money privately, then give that money to the BOE, which would add it as BOE approved stipend.

No question about it I think all income paid for coaching should be run through the BOE and show up on the coach's W2 or 1099 from the school system. However some schools or more likely boosters still try and find ways to pay coaches some money outside of those parameters. If that happens, and to add to Dark Horse78's post, if a booster club or other entity pays a coach under the table, to avoid getting cross-ways with Uncle Sam, that coach would need to report that income on his personal tax return and pay the tax.
