Well, even though Bell is a district rival, I hope they somehow get it right. If you are a Corbin fan, the teams that you want to beat are Bell Co. and Middlesboro, and it just wouldn't be the same if Bell is not at the level or at least close to the level that they have been at for the last 20+ years.

If Bell, Middlesboro, and Pineville were one consolidated district, would it be better? I'd imagine the initial answer is yes, but like Harlan County who was initially good, with the drain on population it would seem to be only a matter of time before it happened with a combined-Bell school.

 

By the way, not suggesting or recommending this happen. Just talking.

Pineville will ever allow that to happen.

 

To answer the question if Bell is still an elite job? The an answer is no. Numbers are down bc of population shift, pay is terrible esp for asst coaches and no support from administration.

I think the best coaches get nice financial packages.

 

Additionally, I think it would be much better for everyone involved if schools were allowed to pay high school football coaches whatever they wanted to pay them and they advertised the salary.

 

When I was coaching at Paris in 1999, Dudley Hilton was across town at Bourbon County. One of our coaches who was at Bourbon County the year before said Hilton was renting his house for $1.00 a month. I don't know if it was true, but the coach who told me this seemed to be trustworthy.

That may have happened in bourbon but not in Bell Co lately. The assistant coaches are making same amount they made in the mid 80's. It is amazing anyone coached, luckily we had dedicated people. With the rumored hire of a coach for political reasons those guys will not coach anymore. They are all more qualified than the "consolidation" pick.

Sadly, it's like that still in many places. The head coaching and assistants haven't changed much, if any at all in 25-30 years.

Yes somewhere around the late 80s. I don't know how that will work his nephew is the qb for Pineville.
