Bowling Green vs. St. Xavier

Featured Replies

Last year I predicted that there would not be 60 points put up against the Purples D all year. Most of you thought I was nuts, but i proved to be fairly accurate. No prediction like that again but i will predict another hard fought game by both teams. I have to say I was very impressed by the "X Factor" Great team, coaches and fans (and running back).

Vic Anderson is the real deal but I still believe that Avery Hibbitt is as good or better. As my prediction was solid last year I will say that Hibbitt is best back in state. You can't really just look at his numbers but you have to also look at his touches. If he carried the ball as much as other backs in state he would easily be leading rusher. Many games he is finished by halftime or 3rd quarter.

Bottom line is - two great teams and a few great players. It will be fun. As last year, I hope X goes 14-1. Good luck!

Truth of the matter is that X did not have the right attitude in last year's state game and Trinity did.

Glaser even referred to this team's arrogance at last year's football parent's meeting. They weren't working as hard as he thought they should so he took them into the gym and asked them why the state title wasn't already on the banner....because they haven't won it yet. They thought that since they won last year ...they would win it again...

When X marched to an easy first touchdown in the title game....they let their arrogance show again and let up.....problem was.....Trinity was not ready for a repeat of the September game. They stepped it up and played a great game. Penalties and other mistakes started to pile up on X. Trinity started to believe...and then showed why they believed.

The X juniors should remember this and learn from it. It's not really payback...but they should remember that good teams like Trinity and any other team that makes it to the finals are not easily beaten twice in the same year.

BG now believes too after their close call last year...should be a good game....I am curious to this years team attitude. They have the talent and the coach.

Very good post :thumb:

This game should once again be a barn-burner. Bowling Green has an awful lot returning. The significant thing here though is that these are not just regular high school players showing up for another year, but certifiable stars (Hibbitt, Jackson, Tucker, Hines, Beard, Tinius, etc.) who will compete for individual post-season All-State teams. Add this to the fact that the Purples will be playing in their home town, have an experienced QB who can run and pass, have a 6-6 receiver who has been "under the radar", have a number of players on the squad to negate a usual X numbers advantage, and have the confidence after last year that they can compete with the Tigers.

On the other hand, St. X. returns only two starters on offense and none on defense from last year. This Tiger team will be very green, but have a lot of young talent. One of the two returning starters, RB Vic Anderson, is a prime candidate with Hibbitt, Beaumont, Minnifield, Taylor, Hines, and Slusher as the top player in Kentucky. Victor has had an outstanding off-season in increasing his strength, weight, and speed. In addition, Will Simmons and Deuce Finch will provide additional great speed and pass receiving ability in the backfield. Drew Eckman will provide the power to the running game. Ben Zoeller, Chris Wade and DJ Hall are all good athletes who will battle to replace Brent Curley at QB. The offensive line will be smaller, but much quicker and more aggressive than last year. Daniel Passifume, who caught the big pass late in last year's Tiger victory, returns for his senior year. Defensively, the Tigers line will be stronger than last season and also much more aggressive. The linebackers and defensive backs will have excellent quickness, and are all hard hitters.

This game will boil down to 3-7 points either way, but I think I'll wait until I see some early scrimmages before predicting which way this 3-7 points will fall. I am definitely thankful, however, that this will be the early game. Last year's Rafferty's Bowl was a terribly l-o-o-n-n-g night!

I think that BG will keep it close throughout the entire game but St.X will prove to be too much for the Purples.

I disagree with your characterization of X's attitude in the state championship. At the beginning of the season, some of them were lazy - which prompted the comments from Glaser that you reference.

I can't speak for each individual player on the team, but for the final game for most of them it was a totally different matter than how you describe it. They came into the game confident, but somewhat afraid because everything seemed like it had come too easily and they knew it wasn't going to be another game like the regular season one or the Scott Co. final last year. They knew a team like Trinity wasn't going to be that easy to beat the second time around, and that is what resulted in their playing tight.

Rather than being cocky, they had a bit of a deer in the headlights reaction when the PAT got blocked and Curley went down. The confident execution and swagger they had going quickly vanished, and they couldn't recapture it. Had the PAT not been blocked, I honestly think it would have been a very different game for the St. X offense, which seemed sort of shocked. Trinity captured a lot of momentum with that play and didn't look back.

I agree with you Clubberlang on the momentum shift. When X missed that extra point (something that used to happen all too often to the Rocks) the Rocks exited the field fired up and the Tigers seemed down. It didn't seem to matter that the Tigers were actually up 6-0. Then when the Rocks held the Tigers to a missed field goal attempt after a turnover, Trinity's confidence grew as X seemed to start to self destruct. Momentum is huge in all games, but it is really huge at the high school level IMO.

I think the excitement for this years game will exceed that of last year's game due to the close outcome last year and the expectations for each team in 06. I can't wait!Just hope it is a bit cooler this year.

What time is this game to be played??

Thanks....

Oxnard, Mrs PH, and I were the only people who predicted a close game last year, and we were right on. Purples up 7-0 on a 51 yd TD blast by then junior HB Avery Hibbitt. St X caught some breaks in the second half along with some quality work by Vic Anderson and the offense. GREAT GAME!!:thumb: :thumb:

I'm predicting another tight game this year. It will be a battle of two of the top RBs in line for Mr Football in Anderson and Hibbitt. Again, the defenses will be very stout on both sides. Whioever wins the battle of field position will win this game (that is, who can take advantage of the short field more). I would love to see a 17-14 Purples win as senior K Casey Tinius takes his rightful place as Kentucky High School Football's finest Place Kicker. He attempted one from 51 yards out last year, and it was long enough but wide left.

Another thing in BGHS's favor this year: there won't be a QB Derby in the Purples Camp this year. McMillian didn't come out this year, so junior Trent Steelman has the job, and he put up some good numbers last year. Runs the Veer very well. The Purples lost some excellent players from last year, but retained most of what made them go last year on both sides of the ball. Many of the new starters got plenty of time on the field too.

Game time is 5:00 Central Time, so don't come in expecting them to play the second game this year! Here's hoping that the Tiger and Purple Faithful can get together after the game and congratulate each other on another super game!!:D

I am sure you are proud of your hometown kicker but I think there are several excellent kickers across the state and unless you line them up together no one can claim theirs is the finest in the state.

Good luck to all of the excellent kickers and good luck with your season.

Should be a very good opener but I think Vic and Deuce will prove to be too much for the Purple folks! X wins by 2 TDs

We will definitely play the first game this time, of which game time will be 5:00 Central Time. The Warren Central/Franklin-Simpson game, a big one for the locals, will be played approximately 1/2 hour after our game ends. That'll be a great time for us to get together after the game!

You might have noticed numerous places under the upper deck where handicapped folks can park their wheelchairs and their attendants can use folding steel chairs to sit down (I imagine that the security police would be glad to get a chair or two out of one of the classrooms if you wish to sit in one of these handicapped areas with us!) We won't be hard to find at all. As you are looking toward the field under the upper deck, you would need to go left, and we'll be sitting close to the left end of the stadium, I think around the 20 yard line or thereabouts. I'm sure that Ox remembers where we sat last year, so he'll find it quite easily. Westsider and macdon should be down there as well, but rather standing nearby. These areas are also in the shade, as Mrs PH hates the heat and humidity down here! Coming from WA State, she says that it isn't football unless there's snow on the ground!!  What a shock to her when she saw her very first BGHS game in 1988, which was the very first game in this bowl series (against Apollo). What was more shocking was that we sat in the upper deck! I told her, "Welcome to football, Southern style!!"  That year was the only tripleheader, as we played the before mentioned game, Oldham Co played Ft Knox in the second game, and Central hosted Paducah Tilghman in the nightcap. We stayed for the entirety of all three games! Hard to believe that that was almost 20 years ago!

Come on down and enjoy some more BGHS hospitality!!:D :D

No doubt St.X has a great backfield. But it will be very hard for X to run the ball with 10-11 men in the box. If Wade and Zoeller can keep teams honest, look for X to have a great season.

This is what PH said "I would love to see a 17-14 Purples win as senior K Casey Tinius takes his rightful place as Kentucky High School Football's finest Place Kicker. He attempted one from 51 yards out last year, and it was long enough but wide left."

He in no way said he was the finest in the state, but, he just might be! Tinius, last year, was the C-J third team all state K. The first and second team all state kickers both graduated last year, if I am not mistaken...if I am, please forgive me...I know the first team all state kicker from ST X did graduate. That gives me a pretty good indication that Tinus is the best returning all state kicker in the Commonwealth!

Of course, its all subjective anyway and everyone has an opinion. That just happens to be ours, and it's based on sound logic.

Good luck to everyone!!

Go Purples!!!! :dancingpa
