Bowling Green vs. St. Xavier

Featured Replies

Oxnard, Mrs PH, and I were the only people who predicted a close game last year, and we were right on. Purples up 7-0 on a 51 yd TD blast by then junior HB Avery Hibbitt. St X caught some breaks in the second half along with some quality work by Vic Anderson and the offense. GREAT GAME!!:thumb: :thumb:

I'm predicting another tight game this year. It will be a battle of two of the top RBs in line for Mr Football in Anderson and Hibbitt. Again, the defenses will be very stout on both sides. Whioever wins the battle of field position will win this game (that is, who can take advantage of the short field more). I would love to see a 17-14 Purples win as senior K Casey Tinius takes his rightful place as Kentucky High School Football's finest Place Kicker. He attempted one from 51 yards out last year, and it was long enough but wide left.

Another thing in BGHS's favor this year: there won't be a QB Derby in the Purples Camp this year. McMillian didn't come out this year, so junior Trent Steelman has the job, and he put up some good numbers last year. Runs the Veer very well. The Purples lost some excellent players from last year, but retained most of what made them go last year on both sides of the ball. Many of the new starters got plenty of time on the field too.

Game time is 5:00 Central Time, so don't come in expecting them to play the second game this year! Here's hoping that the Tiger and Purple Faithful can get together after the game and congratulate each other on another super game!!:D

I would love to meet and see everyone who is coming to the game...PH and I will be staying for both games....Some of us already meet at the same place every year...If you all want to do this, let me know and I will let you know where we will be!!!! I don't care who you root for, we are all a "family" on here and understand we have our own teems that we want to win! Good luck to all during the kickoff games!!!!!!

I only saw what was supposed to be BG's worst game last year, so I can't really see BG competing with X this year. X will control the ball with Vic and the team as a whole will be more focused. The 3td prediction sounds about right to me.

Just let us know where to find you before the game! It would be an honor and pleasure to meet you all. I am looking forward to a close hard fought contest. I will take the Tigers by 7.

Sounds like the best bet to me.

They also barely excaped the Hardin team. My post wasn't downing X because like T, they're a great team. I was saying that their O does or has slowed down a bit as the season goes on. Maybe it is the Gauntlet district that is the cause. X will probably always have one of the state's top Defensive units, but the offense, especially without that O-line they had last year and the QB, may suffer this year. This will be the year where they suffer early because of their harsh schedule, but get better and stronger late.
That was last year, but trust their archrival and district foes that have been playing them yearly since it all started- X is more vulnerable early than late on a very regular basis. Some recent examples:

2004 the early bad loss to Cincy Moeller

2003 the early loss to Lex Cath

1999 the early loss to Cov Cath

Two of those years they lost to teams they SHOULD have beaten (and they should have looked much better against Cincy Moeller.) They also went on to the 4A title in two of those years.

I agree. This is one of those years that St.X will be young and inconsistant early in the season. I would not be surprised if the Tigers dropped an early season game or two then hit stride.

I don't think there will be a better opening game this year than BG - X!

The puples may have lost a lot a players but they still have Hibbert running behind Stuart Hines. A challenge for any defense. Their defense may not be as strong overall as last year but they have key LB's and secondary coming back so they should still be strong.

X does have a lot of gaps to fill on both sides of the ball. On offense the two big questions are 1) how well can this years 'sub - 300' guys replace Elder and Jeffries? and more importantly, 2) who will try to replace Curley. Not just talent but Leadership. He provided intangibles that are hard to replace! Vic and Co. will have to carry the load early until someone steps up and provides leadership out of the QB spot.

On defense, I think this years D will take a little while to gel as there are 11 new starters. I hear this group could surprise some people with how strong they may be. Across the front will be a group that is (10 - 20 lbs) heavier than last year and quicker. I think running on this line will be a challenge. Some solid LB's and DB's fill in the back seven. There seems to be a really strong chemistry in this group and a good mix of seniors and juniors. As usual, a tough defense will be put up by the X-men.

I think they are very committed and feel there is unfinished business from last year.

As for the game: St.X - 24

BG - 14

I think this is a real possibility. With more new starters than usual, an early loss would help them focus. The talent is there to make another strong run by the end of the season.

We went to the title game in all three of those years; won it in 99 and 04 and runner up in 03. Also, in 97, we started 2-3 - losing to Cincy St. X, the Bullfrogs and the Rockheads - before winning the state title.

So if losing this game in August means a state title in Novemeber I'll take the loss.

1. I have heard that this years OL will be more fundamentally sound then last year - and I'll take better fundamentals over size anyday.

2. Whoever replaces Curley will have large shoes to fill. We have to remember to be paitent with whoever is calling the signals this year.

3. I'm sick and tired of hearing about unfinished business, payback, and last game; last year is over. This is a new season and it's time to start paying forward then worrying about payback.

This is a point I particulerly agree on. No one owes anybody anything. Trinity played their best last year- as they should- and they won. Who would want a title if your opponent dogged it? This is a new year and a new, young team.

1) I hear the same thing. Add to the fundamentals the aspect of a little more agile and, word is, more aggressive. This group will do well in my opinion.

3) I was not referring directly to the state game but a more long term goal they had when some of them dressed varsity as sophs. That was: to win a state title each year they were varsity players. So, last year was a bump in the road after winning in 2004. The 'unfinished business' is more about these seniors winning state in their year. From talking to some of them, it's not about 'payback' as much as a focus of them getting the job done while it's their turn in the leadership role. The seniors are a really tightnit group who will give it their all to succeed. I would call that 'paying forward' as you call it. I think Tiger fans will like what they see out of this years team in terms of chemistry and effort.

The Tiger offensive line will be more explosive and athletic than last years OL, I think they will be a much better unit than last year.I also believe the QB job is in very capable hands with Zoeller, he will be pushed by Wade and a couple of sophs.

Truth of the matter is that X did not have the right attitude in last year's state game and Trinity did.

Glaser even referred to this team's arrogance at last year's football parent's meeting. They weren't working as hard as he thought they should so he took them into the gym and asked them why the state title wasn't already on the banner....because they haven't won it yet. They thought that since they won last year ...they would win it again...

When X marched to an easy first touchdown in the title game....they let their arrogance show again and let up.....problem was.....Trinity was not ready for a repeat of the September game. They stepped it up and played a great game. Penalties and other mistakes started to pile up on X. Trinity started to believe...and then showed why they believed.

The X juniors should remember this and learn from it. It's not really payback...but they should remember that good teams like Trinity and any other team that makes it to the finals are not easily beaten twice in the same year.

BG now believes too after their close call last year...should be a good game....I am curious to this years team attitude. They have the talent and the coach.
