So what should it be called?

Featured Replies

You know the debate. Here's the terms I've heard over the years. There may be something I'm missing, but I don't know. Everybody gripes about how the media defines it, so pick one, or provide a better suggestion. Since, you know, these things seem to be getting more common and all.

"Long Gun"

"Assault Rifle"

"Semiautomatic Rifle"

"Automatic Rifle"

"Military-Style Rifle"

"Machine Gun"

Call it what it is. if its a shotgun, call it a shot gun. If it is a hunting rifle, call it a hunting rifle. If it is a handgun, call it a handgun. :idunno:

And Ill add this: If you don't know what kind of gun it is, then say you don't know what kind of gun it is and that you will inform the viewers when you get the correct information. Instead of broadcasting a potentially false narrative, just tell the people it is unclear what type of weapon the suspect is using.

Semi-automatic rifle is the most accurate description.

To a right winger it's a gun or rifle that operates semi automatically, to a left winger it's a Rambo style weapon of destruction. All depends on you're agenda.

This would be a good rule of thumb for all media on all issues. But telling people you don't know now, but to tune in later, doesn't keep people watching. Speculation keeps viewers, so they keep on spouting.

Protecton... That's what it should be called..plain and simple...just say I've got protection and its none of your business..

.223 or 5.56

Follow that with: "Want to see what a .223 or 5.56 round will do to the human body ?

Then: Do you believe me now ?

That gave me a good chuckle right there.:lol2:

"Alright, we're live at the scene of the shooting, Jim can you tell us what kind of weapons the assailants used?"

"It was protection and it's none of your business!"

"Ok, but what kind?"

"Do you want to see what a 5.56 can do to the human body?! Ill take the camera inside if you don't believe me!"

And maybe, just maybe, if we did show some of the bodies, then the rest of America that continues to keep their heads in the sand would understand what we are dealing with....but it's ok, we can all keep pretending it's paint ball and they will all go home safe.

The ATF Firearm Transaction Record or form 4473, which is used in background checks lists firearm types as Handgun(which would include pistols and revolvers) Long Guns (which would include rifles and shotguns). Personally I call mine Sweetie!

Even that would be better than how misinformed they are now.

You're right, that probably would get people to support more firearm regulation.

Right, I thought that's what we were going for. Great marketing minds...
