I said that, if Ashland felt that a Rose Hill coach could bring four or five good athletes with him to Ashland, Ashland may be willing to overlook where it got its bounty and act accordingly. I said that Hall, Fraley, and/or Euton may "entertain" an offer from Ashland but that doesn't mean that they would take it. There is a longstanding history of animousity between the three and those in charge at Ashland. There is not much "mutual love".

 

I really appreciate the post by Blue Blazer because it clearly illustrates the feeling of many Ashland partisans. I would point out to him that Carr Creek is also mentioned in Springfield and that is also for a reason. However, the reason has nothing to do with anything that has happened in the last 75 years. CCNY and NYU were basketball powers in the 1940s and early 1950s. They, too, are prominently mentioned in Springfield. However, their wells have been rather dry for half a century. People who really believe what Blue Blazer posted live in a time warp. That is what I mean when I say that there is still a feeling of superiority and that unrealistic feeling of superiority is part of the portfolio of problems that a new coach will face.

 

Russell has the best sports program in the 16th Region but, obviously, LexCath has the best in the Commonwealth followed by X and T. I would think that it would be difficult for anyone to legitimately argue with the choice of LexCath, X, and T which are, of course, three fine Catholic private schools.

I'm still shocked! IMO the Ashland job is the BEST high school job in the State of Kentucky and one of the top high school jobs in the country! Ashland basketball is in Springfield, MA for a reason! They are the most feared progrm in our area period. And I would guess 99% of the coaches in the 16th region don't want to pull the Cats out of the hat come disrict or regional time!!!! Ashland basketball job (in high school) is equal to the coaching job at UK, Duke, North Carolina, or Kansas!

McDavid, Thomas, and Wilcox is a nice start plus a freshman team that went 19-2. :thumb:

McDavid and Thomas would be special athletes at any school in the region. Beyond that you're reaching.

 

That freshman team dodged a bullet on a technicality by not facing what amounted to an outstanding 8th grade team at Rose Hill.

 

I realize that a lot of you guys find Scooterbob irritating, but the truth has a way of doing that. He makes a good point in regard to taking five years to develop a program. I would say a great coach might be able to do it in four, but without reinforcements Ashland will compete, they will not dominate.

Just some local names for discussion:

 

Grady Lowe - Pretty successful at West Carter

 

Matthew Perry - Morgan Co. has risen. Plus Matthew has shown some willingness to leave West Liberty.

 

Shawn Johnson - Winningest coach in Raceland history.

 

Merle Kidwell - Russell's girls in the mix yearly under the former Lewis Co. Lion Player/Coach.

 

Joe Hampton - Lewis Co. always a tough opponent under Joe.

 

Randy Ward - Cam the Former Ram is a Mountaineer now, could the general be back in the 16th?

 

Bill Bradley - In the system and experienced. Holy Family was always tough to prepare for.

 

Rex Cooksey - Reigning king of the 64th District. Former Tomcat Coach.

 

Brandon Baker - Seasoned and great coaching bloodline. Also former Tomcat Coach.

 

Steve Dodd - Tomcat looking to come home? Reigning king of the 16th Region.

 

Rick Mayes - The Dean of the 16th.

 

Roger Zornes - Took Ironton to the edge of a championship against the OJ machine.

 

 

I left several good assistant coaches out of the mix, knowing the Tomcats wouldnt dare give a new name or face a shot.

 

 

 

Just a couple names that might come up from just outside the area. Willie or Allen Feldhaus.

Wow, and what have you been drinking? They hace had some recent success, but nothing to merit the title as overall best program in the state.

Why does every post involve a coach bringing players with him?

I thought that was illegal unless it was a son.

No reason to think otherwise. I believe that every child that attends Rose Hill does so by choice not by district requirements. Of course I guess the same could be said for every student in the 64th and 63rd district since those schools don't recognize the established district boundries.

Only reason I thought that was because everyone says if the coaches at RH left the players would go too.

Like I said, excellent athletic program, in my opinion the best in the 16th region. You did fail to mention that the boys regional basketball title was the first since the early 70's.

I think they are top 10 in state.

Not sure what "several" means? Maybe 2-3 other school districts?

I think they do stay in-state and within a 100 mile radius.
